The first story from our new series, SLUMSCAPES, focuses on the residents of Kibera, Nairobi who are battling the construction of a new highway that is slated to slice through their community - bulldozing 10 schools, thousands of homes, churches, clinics and graveyards.
Kibera is one of Africa's oldest, largest slums, located just five kilometres from Nairobi city centre, and home to more than 170,000 people.
The battle highlights the precarious situation faced by slum dwellers globally. Many have no legal rights to the land they have occupied for decades, thwarting their efforts to invest in essential services, like education, to improve their lives.

We make short documentaries, explainers and original series for people who care about the world’s biggest challenges. Context is anchored around three of the most significant and interdependent issues of our time: climate change, the impact of technology on society and inclusive economies. We contextualize how critical issues and events affect ordinary people, society and the environment.

When will the british pay restitution?

Restitution? Is'nt it enough that places in Africa that were British colonies suffered because of colonization from the British, not only the British but the French, Germany, Belgium, Spain, and Italy? Mau Mau fraught the British in attempts for winning freedom from the British. When the brits left it was restitution enough that they removed themselves from Kenya. Kibera exsists because of the British and the rail line that runs past. Kibera was a "segregation reserve" to allow "africans" and migrant workers to live at the outskirts of Nairobi. NO Britain does not need to pay anything, it is enough that they are gone. Good riddance colonization has caused to much damage already, attempts at putting a band-aid on the wounds they left will do nothing but further hurt us. If Britain were to pay "restitution" it would go to governments. Do you think that would be a good thing? There enough crooked politicians lining their pockets. Kibera is not the only place in Kenya where Brothers and Sisters face abject poverty every day, what about Huruma Slums on the other side of the city ? Or Viwandani ? And not just in Nairobi, what of the other cities? For me I say it is restitution enough that the British left, they did enough damage and we dont need them to create more.

Why do you make it a birth control issue, you have no idea what you see or are talking about. People in Kibera do not have much choice to life there. They come from other parts of the contenant and country in hope of making their dream come true. Much like the American dream to have a job own a home and have a comfortable life. But because they come with little to nothing to their name other than the clothes on their back they have no place else to go or turn to. Oh yes you see all of the "depravity, desperation, filth, garbage, lack of sanitation" But that is as far as your eye's can see. What I see are people that are struggling to make a living. I see loving family neighbors and community. All they need or want is the chance to make it. It is the same struggle all over the world. If you are born middle class you are lucky, and you may never see the desperation of these people. I feel sorry that you can not see past your self, and your culture. So many see preconceived idea's and notions, STOP take the time to look and learn. Until you yourself have first hand experience or knowledge, do not make such statements. May God bless you and the people of Kibera, and Kiandutu.
