Your story is not unusual for the young ppl of your generation, that’s why our music was so good because it reflected us and who we were. We loved everybody and accepted the fact that no 2 ppl were alike and our mantra was “Live and let live”. We fought against the government, not against each other. I’ve heard that music has a high impact on the life and times of all. I have witnessed this statement. The last few decades was called rap but all I heard was talking hate toward cops, degradation of women, sex without love, hate for the country etc. to a beat meant to cause agitation in the head and soul and look around at what’s going on in the world today.

I am part of the movement this song is directed towards, cus I grew up in that era, and all of the geniuses in music, have come and gone, cus music today is a joke compared to the music I was brought up on, cus n the fities, sixties, & seventies, no matter who the artist was, there was always a message in the lyrics, and that's the quintessential truth, Ruth!!! Where's the message in today's music, is it n the bottle? 👍👌😎

I'm here. I'm an old white woman, and in your pic, you appear to be a young woman of color. But we are both really "everyday people." We realize that Dr. King was SO right when he said people should be assessed by the quality of their character, not the color of their skin, and I would add not their gender, whom they love, or what they believe about God. I've been screaming that since Dr. K said it, and I will be screaming it on my deathbed.

Sly & the Family made history with this song by becoming the first predominantly black _band_ - rather than vocal group - to hit No. 1 on the Hot 100. It was on top for four consecutive weeks, 2/15-3/8/69. The band had two more No. 1 pop hits: “Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin)” (2/14-2/21/70) and “Family Affair” (12/4-12/18/71). The Ohio Players became the first all-black band to go No. 1 pop when “Fire” spent the week ending 2/8/75 there. Earth, Wind & Fire was the second a few months later when “Shining Star” spent the week ending 5/25/75 on top.

Stand, Everybody is a star and Everyday People, are three of the most relevant songs ever written. The message, as they say, is always in the music. What a wonderful time it was to be late teen, coming in adulthood with inspirational songs like these, giving you hope that the world would be a better place. Tell me, was it just a dream?. This is 2020 and the world seems so bleak and dismal. I need a time machine to take me back to 1969.

Yeah its always a dream . It will never happen because it is written. Everything is one ( as in interwoven into same entity) , bad erases good, negative erases positive, war takes out peace, powerful nations need weaker nations so they can feel powerful, the oppressors needs the oppressed to be fulfilled. It balances out. Lion feeds on antelopes, antelopes feeds on grass. Its just life , im sorry to be the bearer of the news but thats reality.

Bill, those fifty years are almost my entire life. The twin dreams of 60's, peace and civil rights, have not been fulfilled but we're getting closer. It's no longer just a few people marching and protesting. Just look at how many Americans of all races and creeds came out last summer after the murder of George Floyd and then we voted to remove trump. Look at how Americans have condemned the Jan 6th Insurrection. The battle to defeat racism and extremism will be long, but much progress has been made. Symbols and statues representing hate are coming down The "n" word, so common and so casually uttered in my childhood, is no longer tolerated. Our children live in a multicultural and multiracial country and they are being taught to love our diversity, not hate and fear it. Humans are flawed, tribal creatures in an imperfect world, but despite long odds we are making progress. Have hope and keep working to make your corner of the world better.

Soon after MLK was killed - Sly Stone wrote this song. A time when there was real racism in the country - 1969 - calling for unity - like MLK in his own way. Peaceful and with dignity. > It truly was -"the best of times & the worst of times". We went to the moon that year and astonished the entire world - contrasting the "times" !
