I’m much more interested in the history of D&D than its future. I run D&D1974 presently. That’s the game that’s the most fun for me. I know most people are looking at the Making of D&D book as a historical artifact book, but to me, it contains the rules I still use.

I really like your “D&D 2014 and D&D 2024 both use 5e” as though they’re two different games both using PbtA. I also really love watching your prepping the game videos. I've recently been thinking about how Devils Bargain from Blades in the Dark is a subtly better mechanic than clocks and flashbacks. It's a mechanic that encourages players to be their own GMs and help you inject interesting things into play.

So that would be: edition, edition, edition, edition, date, date? That doesn't pass the legacy nomenclature logic. It should be either 5.5 or 6th Edition.

I personally use the Outline Potential Scenes section in your Notion session template to paraphrase and re-summarize stuff from the published adventures I'm running and smashing together. That way all my important notes on how things are connected or flow together continue week to week and keeps everything in a somewhat neat place (albeit with extensive use of collapsible toggles, check boxes, etc.). Definitely the least "Lazy" section of the way I do prep, but it's proven very helpful with running my online games and keeping everything straight in my head or quickly accessible in one section of the session notes.

My top three mechanics: Pushed rolls from call of cthulhu, just works great as a devil's bargain and natural solution to the "try again" problem Luck from call of cthulhu, works equally fine as a devil's bargain and makesthe players the judges of their own fate Boons and banes which can stack, many systems. I don't like the binary way advantage works. Boons and banes are equally intuitive, but are better at reflecting the situation in the game

I think it’s really inventive. If you think of damage as endurance it puts it in perspective. You gain damage in combat and get it back daily, but you can loose Heath and it lowers the bar and is harder to get back. Like potentially losing at the top and bottom. Works great for simulating longer term wounds. I’m enthusiastic for it. Looks great too.

I'd add the high aspect and Problem from Fate Core, FAE and Fate Condensed to character creation of D&D. If you can justify how that aspect interacts with the situation in a good way, you roll with advantage. If the master can justify the situation is relevant for your problem, roll with disavantage. Now, the master may interpret your high concept to introduce a problem, and that would be disavantage. And if you can spin anything positive from your problem, advantage. For example, to keep it tematic with D&D High Concept Charismatic Elven Dual Wielder Ranger Problem: I really hate big cities.

Mike . . . if you would just drop the words "I worry" and what you follow them with, your podcast would be 1/3 shorter to listen to. WotC has done enough damage to themselves first by their recent times of pandering to a niche group of players and then later with the OGL debacle. No need to kick that near dead horse. When the majority of your commentary is about what WotC is doing that you disagree with and how it effects others it does indeed seem self serving and with a bias towards you and your clique. I've listened to your podcast for a good amount of time and think you have *the best* GMing advice anywhere. Your Q&A and general guidance is imo the best thing about your podcast. Please, more of that and product spotlights. And by all means put over your products because they are very good. I hope you'll consider spending less time tearing down others' buildings and more time on building your own.

the habit of D&D to not edition number the editions annoys me. I have copies of older edition books I have to look at the publishing date and consult a publishing timeline to know what editions their content is compatible with. If they are changing things like level of taking subclass, CR rating, feats, exhaustion, etc... and if it doesn't make sense to have one player playing a half orc from 2014, with a subclass from something in the last 5 years, while somebody else is playing a 2024 halforc with the new subclasses from the new core books, without making more work for the dm... it's either a new edition or at the very least a new half edition. D&D can call it whatever they want I guess, but when it comes to the table and game setup It's been a decade of fifth edition, what comes next is not just fifth edition with a different date, and sure as beholders have eyes I'm not retroactively changing fifth edition to be 2014. everything else you refer to as 5e is either 5e compatible or a 5e variant, they don't get to claim the colloquial identity of the thing they derive from. Level up 5e isn't the fifth edition of anything, it's a first edition of variations to the fifth edition of D&D even if wizards never called it that, that is what we refer to it as at the table. And it is where LvL up 5e chose the name it would call itself by. it could have just as easily been called level up D&D, or level up 2014 edition, but it's not it's level up 5e.

You make a very "heads I win, tails you lose" situation. You're saying WotC putting 3rd party stuff on D&D Beyond is bad as it draws them to monopolising that website. But, if they never do it, then they're not giving people a chance of being on a large and popular platform.

I just don't understand how ignorant WotC is. "WE" already know that the new core rulebooks are not compatible with 5e, despite their claim. There's power creep for sure. Players are going to constantly be referring to which rules are you playing? And there is no easy reference. So WotC has left it up to the consumers of D&D to decide what it will be called. And just made it confusing for everyone. Eventually, WotC wil have to adopt SOMETHING to differentiate, and they may end up adopting whatever all the players have decided to refer to the changed/new rulebooks as. What a mess. Apparently their marketing and branding teams have just thrown their hands up and have decided they will not have control over this situation.

So people don't want D&D Beyond to be a walled garden where only WOTC official products are available and everything is closed up to 3rd parties because then D&D Beyond becomes the defacto store but, at the same time, people don't wat D&D Beyond to include too many 3rd party products because then D&D Beyond becomes the defacto store... I'm sensing an issue here.

5e *is* 2014 D&D. It's been that for a decade. I don't think it makes sense to rename it. Just give the new edition a name. Given historical version names, 5.5e is what the new version should be called. That's how it was handled back the 3e era. That's how it was handled back in the 4e era. That pattern has worked for decades, and it works perfectly now!

i think trying to separate 5e from dnd is such a massive uphill battle with no real benefit. people have been calling the current version of dnd, 5e for years, including non wotc creators. if im talking about non-wotc 5e products ill use their brand name. that's the point of brands. calling them 5e feels like that makes them generic dnd because of how closely the term 5e is associated with dnd. they are already riding the coattails of wotc, why make it so explicit? ive never heard anyone say, wow 5e is such a great system ill use it to make a new game. it's usually 5e is super popular if we want to make any money we better make a 5e compatible version too or we love dnd a lot, lets make our own settings and supplements for the current version.
