⁠@@anistardi Not every member has to be at the level of the main vocalist to meaningfully contribute though. I think the main point of this video is how well trained their ears are. So many groups from other companies don’t do any harmonies, or very minimal/simple ones if they do, because only their set vocal positions can hold a tune. With SM groups, most members have some singing ability and most seem to have a good understanding of music itself, which enables them to have a lot more depth in their songs through harmonies and through most or all members being able to sing the chorus.

@@anistardi EXO introduced kpop to me back in 2014, then for some reason I started sticking to SM groups. I never realized WHY until the SM and other companies started releasing the behind the scenes of recordings with the raw vocals. It was then that I finally realized, I unconsciously made SM artists as the standard, my ears has been accustomed to actual good vocals and songs that have overprocessed vocals gives me the ick lol.

Alot of kpop idols can sing but very few sing with support. Most SM vocalists have very good vocal support that have been developed since training days while the dancers & rappers are taught breathing techniques to support their vocals. And perhaps the best testament to SM's focus on vocals is the continued vocal lessons even after debut. A good vocal support & singing technique is what allow you to deliver a great song and to sing for years with minimal wear & tear on your vocal chords. Another aspect I appreciate about SM's vocal program is the emphasis on harmonization. Each & every group from them can harmonize well. You don't just sing but you sing WITH your group. And don't even get me started on the vocal layering. Top notch 👌. No one does vocal layering as well as SM I swear. Alot of singers can sing but very few know how to sing correctly. Most of those few are SM vocalists.

3:15 Oh I remember this clip. Taeyeon and Tiffany solo stans were at war. Tae was getting hate for being a bad friend, and this was back when people were still blaming her for "kicking out Jessica". Tiffany was getting bashed for her vocals even though she had nodules. Bottom line is that in this clip the feedback was just way too loud and Tiffany, who was already a darn great singer, should be considered a beast in today's standards.
