To update your old Samsung Galaxy Tab running Android 7.1, here are a few options depending on whether an official update is available or if you need to use unofficial methods.
Option 1: Check for Official Updates
1. Go to Settings:
Open the Settings app on your Galaxy Tab.
2. Tap Software Update:
Go to About Device - Software Update.
3. Check for Updates:
Tap Check for updates. If an official update is available from Samsung, follow the on-screen instructions to download and install it.
If no updates are available, it means Samsung has stopped providing software updates for your tablet.
Option 2: Install a Custom ROM (Advanced Method)
If your device is no longer receiving official updates, you can install a custom ROM like LineageOS to upgrade your device to a newer version of Android.
Steps to Install a Custom ROM:
1. Backup Your Data:
Custom ROM installation will erase all data. Use Google Drive, Samsung Cloud, or a manual backup to secure your files.
2. Unlock the Bootloader:
Go to Settings-About device and tap Build number seven times to enable Developer options.
In Developer options, enable OEM unlocking.
You may need to connect to a computer with ADB (Android Debug Bridge) to unlock the bootloader.
3. Install a Custom Recovery TWRP
Download TWRP || TeamWin Recovery Project for your specific model.
Use Odin (a Samsung flashing tool) to install TWRP. Connect your tablet to the PC and boot it into Download mode (hold Power + Volume Down + Home). In Odin, flash the TWRP recovery image.
4. Download a Compatible Custom ROM:
Go to LineageOS or another custom ROM website.
Download the ROM file that’s compatible with your device (e.g., LineageOS for your Galaxy Tab model).
5. Download Google Apps (GApps):
Custom ROMs don’t come with Google apps (Play Store, Gmail, etc.). Download the appropriate GApps package for the Android version you're installing.
6. Flash the ROM Using TWRP:
Boot your device into TWRP recovery mode hold Power + Volume Up + Home
In TWRP, wipe the data by selecting Wipe = Advanced Wipe and choose Dalvik/ART Cache, System, Data, and Cache.
Flash the custom ROM by selecting Install and then navigate to the downloaded ROM file.
After flashing the ROM, install GApps in the same way.
7. Reboot the Device:
Once the ROM and GApps are installed, go back to the TWRP main menu and tap Reboot System.
Option 3: Use Samsung Smart Switch (If Available)
Download and install Samsung Smart Switch on your computer.
Connect your Galaxy Tab to the PC via USB.
If an update is available through Smart Switch, it will give you an option to update your device.
Note: Not all old devices are supported by Smart Switch, but it’s worth checking.
Option 4: Use Android Go Apps (If No Update Possible)
If updating is not possible and your device is struggling with newer apps, try using Android Go apps (lightweight versions of Google apps) to improve performance:
Download apps like Google Go, KZbin Go, Maps Go, etc., from the Play Store. They are designed to run on older or less powerful hardware.
Important Notes:
Custom ROMs can provide updates, but they may come with bugs or compatibility issues.
Flashing a ROM can void your warranty and may risk bricking your device if not done carefully.
Make sure to follow model-specific instructions when flashing a ROM or installing custom recovery.

open custom setting in Odin, disable automatic reboot. Once the AP flash of the rwp is complete in Odin, quickly shut down the tablet by holding the power button, once off, quicly hold power+ volume up + home button. I was struggling for a week until i found this solution
