SM64 - Luigi Restored

Finally after 24 years, the original Luigi model has been found.
Well, someone had to port it back to the game eventually.
Luigi's model is very simple compared to Mario's. It lacks all the cap variants (including no cap), and his lighting seems a bit harsher.

After a decade of fan-made models it's so cool to see how Nintendo put together Luigi. I'm assuming the model is incomplete and would be refined and polished a lot more outside of the lacking cap variants, but the thought that Luigi got a unique model further than a Mario re-colour and the thought that somebody purposely worked on this just feels so nice, i'm even more curious to how far multiplayer got now, i'd imagine it got a fair bit further than testing if they actually took the time to start developing a unique Model for Luigi.

Apparently Luigi got so far into development that Charles Martinet even recorded voice clips as him; they're pretty rough-sounding compared to Mario Kart 64-onwards, but it's still fascinating to hear (apparently the clips heard in the Super Mario Advance games are just pitched-up versions of his Mario 64 voice, so the audio at least got put to some use in official Nintendo media). Kinda curious to see if it's possible to add his voice back in as well as his model.

Beta Mario model in the files also lack cap variants like "Beta Luigi" as I've always referred to him as even as a kid. Luigi clearly shares the flat hair like Beta Mario as well, which means if he was scrapped in February of 1996, that is probably around the time Mario was redesigned and given cap variants, as the pre-release was shown a couple months later in April.

L was originally designed as the counteraction to the Personalization AI: An asset inaccessible and unmodifiable by the AI in an attempt to provide a consistent baseline for the game to remain stable, as personalized copies up to that point we're being radically modified by the AI to have assets from other games, and other development cycles. But when the AI attempted to split the model into fragments to prevent Luigi from being attainable, having seen L as an attempt to limit its modification to Mario 64, Nintendo saw this as another attempt to attain sentience, and ultimately chose to scrap the AI, leaving Mario 64 in the state it is today. Until today.

I really wonder how far they were gonna go with Luigi if they did more work on him. Would he have different properties compared to Mario? By this point in the Mario series, its already been established that Luigi had worse traction than Mario. I also wonder if they ever got far enough to have Charles record voice lines or if they were just gonna pitch up Mario's voice clips. I still don't know whether or not those voice lines for Luigi were legitimate. This is such a fascinating video to watch now that we have a glimpse into Luigi's development.
