I think because traditionally the pink tights and shoes are used to not break the line so they are to match the dancer's skin tone. With darker dancers having tights and shoes that are your color help to accomplish the same thing....not breaking the lines​@annapachaclarke2392

​@newyorker2581 yes and no. I recently learned that the "ballet pink" we know is deliberately pinker than even fair skin, so patrons would know they weren't seeing scandalous bare legs. They were meany to be not quite the right color. Shoes and tights matching definitely helps with lines though

@@annapachaclarke2392 Even though you are coming from someone with a good heart and yes in an ideal world you are so right they are ALL brilliant so who cares about the colour of tights. It the fact that “pink tights” have always been so to not break the line and of course this was the thinking behind pink tights historically. Also, assuming there was no need to consider anything different from pink tights because ballet dancers were always always white and a black girl just would never be considered or heard of doing ballet cos she would never be chosen - hence the historical rhetoric of only pink tights needed. However, I do feel we’ve transcended this period of prejudice and therefore can perhaps not focus on the pink tights too much NOW. However number two - what about choice, manufacturers should give all dancers of different colours a choice. But you mustn’t assume racism is the focus as that’s your privilege ignorance not knowing the history of the colour of pink tights and thinking what you see is all nice and equal. What the eyes see doesn’t mean the whole story is being told. So you making a thing about the tights in all your ignorant privilege bliss can sometimes muddy the waters. It’s got nothing to do with these girls per se as all gorgeous and great dancers. More to do with choice. Some where the status quo always fits and others have no choice but to go along with it. You I can see is a lovely person but you can’t possibly understand until you’ve walked in the shoes of the “status quo without a choice” or the Eurocentric is always the way to go and anything else is “what are you on about”, or “I don’t understand”. It’s all about equal choices for all, an equal platform for all and that’s how humans keep evolving for every generation to become more holistically human and certainly not stagnant (yesterday’s thinking) thinking everything is OK cos that’s what the eyes see. Understand how lucky life must be to not have a clue about these things cos you don’t need to and it will never affect you being the fact you are on the side of the status quo, the norm, the way things are done or have been done since historical times and no change. I don’t know if you get it even now but many of the younger generation do no matter what their colour. But just understand I’m empathetic and understand that you are coming from a good but still ignorant place.😊
