Is the only possibility to flush the cooling system with fresh water, to put the engine in a barrel? I can't find a way to connect the hose because the water intake is directly above the propeller.
@JerGoes Жыл бұрын
Under the engine block is a bolt that is slightly larger than the other ones holding the powerhead in, (I think it's 13mm and M8 thread) there is a special hose pipe attachment available that screws into that hole (search for 'Tohatsu Flushing Attachment') you can pump water through the engine from a regular hose pipe however DO NOT run the engine when doing this, just let the hose and water pressure do the work.

great video! got everything back together (after some tries!). Now I have water coming out the tell-tale. BUT - should there be water inside the shaft? I started it up without the side plug/bung and water was shooting out the side. Put the plug in and now it's not shooting out, but is seeping around a the plug a bit. I fear I don't have the elbow in exactly straight. Don't want to disassemble. Thoughts?
@JerGoes4 жыл бұрын
The tell tale is only that it's to give you an indication the water is pumping. most of the water goes out with the exhaust inside the leg and into the water (helping to counter the heat from the exhaust)

Hey the hardest part of the job( aligning the drive and shift rods) you left out. Lol
@JerGoes2 жыл бұрын
I didn't think the shift rod was that hard to be honest, the drive shaft oh man that can be a pain in the (*)&^ :D but just being careful to guide it home and slowly rotating the prop or flywheel until it slots home becomes 2nd nature.

You did a good job. But don't show how to line up the driveshaft and the gear shift to line up to the lock bolt. How the hell did you get it in the bloody hole?
@JerGoes3 жыл бұрын
The Driveshaft was a bit of a pain, I edited the video because it just wouldn't go home, but a bit twisting the prop(while in gear) and turning fly wheel and it slid home. The Gear selector I put the lever in reverse and push the gear selector rod on the gearbox end down until it clunks into place, getting the rod to go through the front of the leg wasn't too difficult (compared to getting drive shaft back in). if necessary pop the little rubber grommet out where the gear rod goes through and pop it back in once it's all together. The lock nut bit on the gear selector rod, keep it lose-ish until you have the leg on somewhere near then slide it into position (while gear lever and gearbox are still in reverse) position it central in the access hole and tighten it down.

Mercury / Mariner are owned by same parent company as Tohatsu, it's the same with the 4 strokes, I have a 6hp 4 stroke Mercury 2008 a friend has a 2009 Mariner both engines are identical to the Tohatsu equivalent under the hood. In fact the lower end is the same on 4 and 2 strokes, same impeller, same process to change them.

Excellent video. Helped me tremendously. But now I have a problem. I replaced the impeller, used dish soap like you showed, but I can't get the lower unit back in place to bolt it back closed. Everything stops at about 2 inches from fully repositioned. Any ideas? Thanks for the video.
@JerGoes5 жыл бұрын
I assume you mean you're having trouble getting the drive shaft back into the spline in the power head, sliding it home? these engines can be a pain in the posterior for this, make sure the gearbox is in reverse (push the selector rod down) use a torch to shine light up into the leg to see where the drive shaft has to go, carefully push it up, at same time make sure the gear selector rod slots through the hole at the top of the leg (8:45 in the video I think). if the lower unit doesn't slot home, turn the prop slowly while trying to push it home, while the gearbox is in reverse gear the driveshaft should rotate as you turn the prop, it can be fiddly but once you get the correct alignment it should slot home easily. alternatively remove the kill tab and slowly rotate the flywheel while trying to slot it home (same effect as rotating prop to move drive shaft).
@dmgolub15 жыл бұрын

@@dmgolub1 :( all I can suggest is what I posted above, look up the leg, to make sure everything is sliding into the right place, make sure the gear linkage rod goes through the hole at top of leg and slowly turn fly wheel or prop while trying to push the gear box home, also I suppose make sure the water pipe is slotting into the pump housing correctly.

Good video...cant get mine to shift back into neutral or forward after tightening🤯
@JerGoes4 жыл бұрын
The starting point for getting the gear linkage back in line is to put the selector lever in reverse, Then loosen off the connector bolt under the rubber grommet, Then push down the selector rod as shown around 8:40 in the video, I just pushed down on it with a bit of wood until the gearbox clunked into reverse. with both the lever and the gearbox now in reverse tighten the connector grommet and hopefully it should all be working now. Hope that helps.

The copper water pipe? If so can't say I've had this problem, but if it is, is the water pipe you've got just a straight piece of copper pipe? or does it have a bent piece at the end? The water pipe usually connects into the engine via a right angle bend which locks into a rubber grommet thing, that top piece of pipe goes into a collar which the lower length (straight pipe) also couples into. If it's the top bent piece the only way is to take the power head off and slot it back in, if it's the lower you 'might' get lucky and get it back in but in all honesty I've never had to do it and I'd imagine it would be a pain in the backside so I'd probably opt to just remove the power head, remove the full water pipe and reassemble / replace it properly. Sorry I don't have a simple answer :( but I've never had to do this before, I'm working largely by memory.

Jer like others I am having issues getting the thing back together. My gear rod has a slight bend in it. Is this normal and if so which way should the bend be oriented?
@JerGoes4 жыл бұрын
Yes a slight bend is normal, It's been a good while since I opened mine up to check so can't recall of the top of my head which way round the gear selector goes. Things to check as you put it together again 1) the gear lever is in Reverse and the gear rod on the lower unit is pressed all the way in 2) make sure the gear rod goes through the hole at the top of the leg and pokes out at the front top of the leg otherwise it just wont go back together 8:46 in the video. 3) lining the drive shaft and it's splines up can be a pain in the backside, keep rotating the prop (as the gearbox is in gear the shaft will rotate) and keep trying to slide it home, this can be really infuriating and is likely the cause of your problem. It's worth getting a torch and looking up the leg to see where the drive shaft is supposed to go and is going, it can jam to the side of where it's supposed to be slotted. I must admit with my Mercury 4 stroke (same leg) I pulled the safety lanyard and rotated the fly wheel instead of the prop and this worked almost instantly for resembling where the prop rotation I was there 5 minutes with no joy, could be coincidence but, it worked so I mention it anyway.
@mrsammy1010104 жыл бұрын
Got it. It was lining the gear rod up with the hole. A couple questions. At first I could not get into forward. After playing with it that now works but it slides into forward too easily. Do I go back to the linkage and just find the sweet spot? Also the grommet that covers the linkage does not seal air tight is this an issue. Any suggested fixes? Thanks the engine is running well with a good discharge of water. You have been a great help.
@JerGoes4 жыл бұрын
@@mrsammy101010 Been there and got the T shirt haha The linkage isn't aligned properly, common fault when I made this video I had a similar problem (but obviously to spare my blushes I didn't include that clip ;) ), to fix it, loosen the linkage bolt off (under the access bung/grommet) push the lever on the power head into reverse position and then press the gear rod (as described at 8:46 in the video) fully down then tighten the linkage bolt hopefully this should fix that. And the grommet doesn't need to be air tight (if it ever was) just secure.

Does this motor use engine oils?
@JerGoes4 жыл бұрын
It doesn't use engine oil, the lubrication comes from the 2 stroke oil in the fuel. The 4 stroke version of these engines has an identical leg and water pump so the same process is used on all small tohatsu, mercury and mariner engines.

@JerGoes7 жыл бұрын
Yes I had the exact same problem on both my Mercury 6hp (4 stroke) and this Tohatsu (same leg assembly on both engines). Get a torch and look up the leg to make sure you are sending the drive shaft up correctly. Also make sure the gear selector rod is going through the little grommet / hole at the front of the leg, (see 8:54 into the video, that bit). I edited out the bit where it wouldn't slide home (it was a little bit more annoying than I presented in the video). but literally all I done was make sure the gear rod was in the right place, while the prop was definitely still in reverse rocked the prop back and forth until it slid in (or try turning the prop very slowly), it really was a pain in the arse. When I was doing the Mercury and the same thing happened I pulled the kill cord out (to make sure the engine didn't fire) and moved the flywheel gently (same effect as rocking the prop.
