Hello Wayne, Glad to see you have a handle on your rebuild.

Lol!

The deposits that you found were not metal corrosion (iron oxide rust) that you are familiar with. Likely, it's aluminum oxide which creates a whitish residue. When all the aluminum atoms have bonded with oxygen the oxidation process stops and doesn't continue to deteriorate the material like iron oxidation does.

Very nice. It's amazing what we can find online these days. Now if only I could find "cheap" parts for my 5hp propane outboard...

That might be tricky!

Keeping the zinc anodes installed and clean might help to keep the handles better. 50 years is not too shabby! Aluminum boats want zincs.
@WayneTheBoatGuy2 жыл бұрын
Good to know! - I don't think this boat has any anodes at all!
@darrylmcleman64562 жыл бұрын
Lots of them dont.but if they spend time in the water at a buoy or a dock they should.I think having one on the outboard may help some if it is allowed to stay under water.

Glad to come across this video! Those are the absolute exact handles I've been debating on purchasing for my Jon. Been curious on how they looked in real life far as the 'drill holes' I need to drill a decent hole. Definitely buying! I'll see if Amazon will give you commission lol jk. Thanks!

They've held up well - and I was nervous before drilling them as well.

Great video, I managed to clean up my stern handles on my 14 ft. Aluminum boat, They did turn out pretty good. What I'm trying to do on it now is add a aluminum grab handle on the right and left side to hold on too while traveling across the lake. My boat is similar to yours, it is a 1968 JC Penny's that I have restored. Any idea's on that?

The Amazon link in the video description takes you to the handles I bought, if those aren’t ideal, from there you might be able to see some options. Grab handles would definitely need some support underneath.

Question, I have a similar but newer Alumacraft V16 with similar handles attached through the transom with a pretty basic lock nut from the factory. Think it’s reasoble to tow a couple kids on a tube from those handles? The boat didn’t come with any other transom attachment points.
@WayneTheBoatGuy2 жыл бұрын
As with any towing situation there's a lot of things to consider and most small aluminum boats aren't really designed for towing.
@dj13yrs1 Жыл бұрын
Might be better towing from the engine itself I did tow with my 12ft flat bottom I put 2 eyelets through the top corners. If you tow from the handles put a piece of aluminum plate under the nuts and possibly use grade8 hardware but don't leave the grade 8 hardware installed for storage

How or what did you use to put them back on bolt wise?
@WayneTheBoatGuy Жыл бұрын
I used stainless steel bolts and flat washers with locking washers on the inside. You can see them in my video about replacing the transom in my 12 foot boat.
@rider660r2 жыл бұрын
Those "bolts" are ordinary cheap machine screws and are just steel......they're rusted (see the orange/brown color?),aluminum doesn't rust it will corrode (which is a whitish color). Those orig. handles could have been cleaned up once you were able to knock those cheap screws out.
@WayneTheBoatGuy2 жыл бұрын
I rechecked the ones I removed and they were not magnetic, and they all broke very easily making me assume they were aluminum. And I tried for a little while to remove the screws from the handles and they had totally become "one" with each other.
@rider660r2 жыл бұрын
@@WayneTheBoatGuy Ok,lil surprising though since they were reddish brown color that indicates rust and steel

Them screws can't be Alum there Rusted I bet they're steel screws. Also You think those at $16.00 are a Bargin huh?
@WayneTheBoatGuy2 жыл бұрын
The screws snapped pretty easily so I pretty sure they were aluminum.

Is that what causes the aluminum to corrode? Makes sense!
