Another advantage to centering as you do is that there is less stress on the wrist. Constantly pushing the clay, as in the widely taught method, puts ALOT of strain on the wrist if you are a production potter.

Hi, I loved your video! I was taught by throwing enough water to the clay while throwing, but I like your no water method, I’m going to try this method! Thank you! And also, can you show me how to make the one curve bowl, please! Thank you!

The One-Curve Bowl video is available to everyone on learnpottery.com. It is $22 USD to rent, or you can subscribe to The Core Skills Series (which includes the One-Curve Bowl) for $30/month. It's easy to unsubscribe anytime.

Thank you very much. Looking forward to your other lessons. PLease tell me what your final measurements for this small bowl are. Again, thanks.
@goodelephantpottery3 жыл бұрын
I don't actually remember the exact measurements. The project is not about throwing something to an exact measurement. The lesson is about basic throwing techniques and proper trimming. Just throw a "small" bowl that feels right for a 1 pound ball of clay.

Hi! I am subscribed to your classes on Vimeo. Could you give me the measurements of the bowl of class 1 and 2? Thank you very much, your classes are amazing!
@goodelephantpottery3 жыл бұрын
The measurements of the bowls in Projects 1 and 2 are not important. Just make “small” bowls. The primary goal of Project 1 is to trim the bowl accurately. The primary goal of Project 2 is to master “the first big push.” Making matching sets and throwing to exact sizes comes later in the series!

Just started a pottery class and your video perfectly explains everything my instructor has failed to! During centering, I did not see you cone up and down.. is that not necessary? I usually manage to center pretty quick but am not a fan of coning up and down.. but they insist on doing it.
@goodelephantpottery Жыл бұрын
Coning is an extension of wedging. If your clay is well wedged, coning is not necessary. I will sometimes do it when I feel like my clay is not consistent enough, say if it has been sitting around for a few days after pugging it. There’s way too much dogma in pottery instruction. It really bugs me when teachers just repeat what they’ve been told, without any critical thinking. “Coning is always necessary” is one of those dogmas.

Thank you so much for your explanation! I was wondering though if putting the needle tool all the way through my bowl will create problems later? Thanks again and also for your other videos. I already purchased the one about glazing and fount it really helpful. :)
@goodelephantpottery2 жыл бұрын
The needle hole doesn’t cause a problem. The act of trimming will seal the hole shut again. Glad you are enjoying the videos!

Hi, should we perfect the assignment before moving to the next project? Do the other videos have the same structure and contain an assignment? Thanks
@goodelephantpottery Жыл бұрын
Yes, you should have a good command of this project, before moving onto the next one. Each video in the Core Skills Series contains a specific assignment. And some of them contain a “homework” assignment for you to explore afterwards.

Thanks for the answer. Could you tell me if you are left/right handed? I am ambidextrous and would need to adjust accordingly.
@goodelephantpottery Жыл бұрын
@@jpsion I am right-handed. Ambidextrousness is a good trait for a potter!

So you don’t cone your clay before opening?
@goodelephantpottery2 жыл бұрын
I don’t cone, but there’s nothing wrong with coning. Coning is a combination of wedging and centering. It helps to homogenize the clay, as well as center it. If your clay is already well-wedged, then coning isn’t necessary.
