The oil questions always slay me!!! Multi grade oil is just that !!! 5W30 is thinner when cold than 10W30 is but the same when hot. So would you rather be pushing peanut butter through a cold somewhat dry engine or something thinner that will get there much sooner? I personally use synthetic 5W50 in everything but snowblowers because the 5W30 is fine for the cold climate....... I.M.O. NEVER had any engine issues! My generator is a 1997 Honda EM5000, my garden tractor & snowblower are 1998 and my push mower is 1986. All run beautifully and start effortlessly, and always shut off the fuel and run the carb dry after every use and Ethanol Free fuel!!!!!!!

Thank you, the intake valve has a valve seal, the exhaust valve doesn't have one, no place for it. The exhaust valve does have .006 play in the guide. The engine is a Briggs 19G412-1129E1 you guys are fantastic.

I have a standard Predator 9000 generator. Both my furnace and Ac have in line MARS surge protectors. Will this help in anyway from the dirty electricity. I have been using my generator with no issues. Most other electronics are in power strips that have surge protectors. Any insight on this?
@Bassguitarist19859 ай бұрын
No they will not protect against dirty power, AKA high total harmonic distortion. Surge protection is better than none at all. It won't prevent malfunction which is a higher chance than with an inverter generator.

Great conversation on Thd. Just what I needed to hear though it's a disappointment. I bought a used Firman tri fuel 7500/9000 generator barely used for $500. Starts and runs great but I read the Thd is 11-14%. I'm wondering now if I can even use it for my digital controlled Mig welder. I really got it for rare brown outs during summer. Wanted to run lights, TV, refrigerators. Now I know I can't. It's a beautiful machine but turns out not much I can use it on. On another note, someone asked how you all got started in your sidelines. I'd like to know what kind of work is your day jobs?

How do I know if my Generac 5,000kw is pulling a load with nothing plugged in. Can't seem to get rpm's up. I don't have a tach, also it smokes a lot when first starting up but stops when warmed up. Valves have been lapped.
@Bassguitarist198510 ай бұрын
Grab a tach, the engine will noticeably drop in speed when loaded. Smoking a lot at startup but clearing up after it's been running is a valve issue, maybe a combination of worn guides and worn valve stem seals.

I have a Westinghouse 14000W dual fuel that stops after 1/2 hour on propane. Did it 3 times. Never had any gasoline in it. Shutting down it sounds like it's overloaded. I turned off the main breaker, it still quits. Do I look at the powerhead, or the propane regulator, or is ir something else?
@Bassguitarist198510 ай бұрын
How big is your propane tank? What are you running when it stops? What you mean it sounds overloaded?
@nobodyimportant614110 ай бұрын
30 lb tank. Slosh test feels more than half full. Gen sounds like an overload where pitch changes. Slightly increases volume while the engine slows and eventually stalls. This happens in a period of 5-10 seconds. Can't be a real output overload with the gen breaker off the last time. Thanks for the reply.
@Bassguitarist198510 ай бұрын
@@nobodyimportant6141 if you don't see smoke from the powerhead and none of the circuit breakers have tripped I doubt that it's an overload then. Sounds like a fuel delivery problem. I assume that it has a primary regulator at the tank connector and then the demand regulator is on the machine itself. Does it do the same thing on gasoline?

@@Bassguitarist1985 Running normal house load. Guessing no more than 7kw. No range, dryer, and hot water heater breaker off. I have run this setup at least four times prior with no problem during 3-5 hours running. we have used 1200W microwave without issue.

Hello guys, is it possible to hook up a 12 volt outlet on my generator if it didn't come from the factory with one?
@jcondon110 ай бұрын
Most generators that have a 12 volt outlet are using an auxiliary stator winding meant for that purpose. The easiest way to get 13 volts out of you generator would be a transformer plugged into the 120v AC
@pederb822 ай бұрын
As an electronics engineer I’d like to add a little on THD. If it is high the main issue is that you generate heat in the power supply of the device you are using. Especially engines. Your non Ali express phone charger has capacitors that make it handle it just fine tho the rectifier will run a little hotter. On the compressor of your fridge it will run a little harder as It’s not as smooth and also a bit hotter, but it will work and probably won’t cause harm, but it depends on how high the THD is. When it comes to electronics it basically depends on the quality of the device and how much you want to risk shorten the life of the devices you use. That said, the utility power is rarely clean. In the US the limit is 3% but I have rarely seen it less than 5%. An good inverter generator can produce 0,5% THD.
