Tom, I am blown away at what you are capable of producing. That small press is such high quality. I bought a small press and it was thousands of dollars and it is not nearly of the quality that you made. I can not wait to see this large press. It will not just be an amazing machine but a work of art. It will be a priceless unique tool that if taken care of will last centuries. I really love watching your video. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and skill with the rest of us.

That's a rather special piece of equipment you have made there - brilliant workmanship from what I can see. I'm really looking forward to seeing the monster when it has been created. What a nice piece. Before I got into working into the old bikes and cars and machine work, I went to school for printmaking. We used a monster probably similar in size to the one you're working on now. We used a film on lexan rather than etching directly into a plate. It was photo exposed and developed in some chemicals which created the etched surfaces. I still do silk screening but do miss the intaglio printing. Great video.

Cool video. I'm excited to see that large press come together. A few years back when I was starting at the forge, someone brought in a large etching press bed that was warped and they wondered if we could fix it. Unfortunately it was going to cost them more than they wanted to pay. I wish I could make it up there this weekend. Have fun. -Kyle

I was wondering when there would be something on the etching press. Really cool design on the mini-press. The height adjustment is really well thought out. At school they had an antique etching press, well antique by today's standards, and the way they did it is they had a chain underneath the bed that adjusted both sides at the same time, one screw being counter-clockwise. Problem with that is over time the two screws and supports for the roller went apart at the top and cracked the cast iron support rails and so at some point someone added a brace across the top. What they did seem to get right, in retrospective after hearing from you that the bed warps, is that the bottom of the bed which was cast iron also, had a square grid cast in to it. So this press even after all this time and the "towers" failure still had a straight table from one side to the other. Can't wait for more work on the big one.
@oxtoolco
@oxtoolco 10 жыл бұрын
Hi Aserta, I would love to examine some older presses. I volunteered to service a couple of larger etching presses so I could examine them in close detail. The large press will have a synchronized height adjustment but done from the top. All the best, Tom

Hey Mike, Answering comments takes the most time of all the things on KZbin. I think its important to make the connections to the viewers and answer legit questions. The brownish metal is not actually metal. Its a phenolic laminate called Garolite. Cheers, Tom

Very interesting, and I am looking forward to seeing the big press built. The hand wheel episodes were fun! I think your camera is trying to compensate for the whiteboard, that's why the exposure keeps changing. Perhaps a different angle would help or lock the exposure for that shot.

Tom "Frank Abignale Jr" Lipton ... now it is all starting to make sense *lol* I am going to have to google thrust bearings as I wasn't catch the pre-loading explanation, but your attention to detail is great Tom and love the build plate you put on. That big press is going to be a beast - are you going to have to camber the rollers to maintain consistent pressure over the full 48"? Might have to ask Adam's UPS lady up to give you a hand when you are mounting them...... :)
@oxtoolco
@oxtoolco 10 жыл бұрын
Hey Steve, The thrust bearings are sandwiched with a plate in between. The collars preload the bearings so there is no play but they can still rotate freely. As the press is loaded the bearings allow the screws to turn easily under load. Hope that helps. cheers, Tom

Just an exemplary project! Well done! I'm really looking forward to seeing the 'big one' now. Do you have any idea to the amount of pressure/in2 required for optimum ink transfer? Thanks for sharing this item. I saw several approaches to construction that I can apply to some of my anticipated projects.
@oxtoolco
@oxtoolco 10 жыл бұрын
Hi Fred, The pressure is a difficult thing to quantify. Best I can figure it ranges from 20 to 75 lbs per lineal inch. It depends on the image and type of plate used. The blankets distribute the pressure over a larger area so the numbers are probably a peak at the nip point. All the best, Tom

Nothing wrong with phenolic, every material has its place. I'd be tempted to use pressure gauges instead of scales, but the verniers obviously work. I don't really know about printing presses, but they're a cool machine. How are you retaining the bronze nut?

Wow! Nice build. I would like to know how one would calculate a vernier scale like the one you made for the press, i.e. how far apart the lines on the verneir in relation to a fixed scale marking.
@oxtoolco
@oxtoolco 10 жыл бұрын
Hi Jim, A vernier is a beautifully simple device. If you take an increment say one inch for our discussion. You divide that one inch into ten increments. This gives .1 inch divisions. Now the vernier scale is also one inch long but is divided into nine equal increments. This further subdivides the .1 inch divisions into ten increments giving .01 resolution. There is a good article on Wikipedia about Mr Vernier. Cheers, Tom

Really nice craftsmanship! I enjoy all your videos.... I have a question. I also live in the Bay Area. I live on the coast just south of SF about a block away from the ocean. I'm always paranoid about corrosion so I often make parts out of stainless when otherwise steel would be just fine. I was wondering with your rollers if you could share where you have them Ni plated. If that press can bend 1" aluminum over time, how often do the plates with the embossing need to be replaced? And do the plates imprint the image or just transfer ink?
@oxtoolco
@oxtoolco 10 жыл бұрын
Hi Andre, The bed plate on the small press was 1/2 inch aluminum. The individual plates are not run through the press that many times so they don't seem to take a curvature. The plates do both, emboss the plate and transfer ink. The image actually has some relief to it. Cheers, Tom

Tom, that is cool! No, it's VERY Cool! :) The demo press at the U. S. Currency Printing Plant (USCPP) is a monster, too, probably about the size of the one you have under construction. I want to say that it has a huge piece of granite for the bed, but I can't remember for sure. Oh! Maybe the USCPP has some old, used plates of hundred dollar bills that they're done with? I'll have to ask next time I'm out their way.You could TIG in Ben Franklin's portrait and grind it smooth so your wife could scratch in your portrait instead. On second thought, you might just want to go with a completely new design. No point in having to haggle over royalties or risk copyright infringement with Uncle Sam. Why not base the new currency on a unit called the Oxen, or, for short, an Ox? The 100 Ox bill would have your portrait on the front, and, naturally, the reverse side would have the YAM image on it. Of course the bills would have to be printed with blue ink matching your blue Sharpies. The motto on them could be, "Let's suit up and get started!" Exchange rate would be 0.746 Ox = 1 horsepower. Not sure how that would translate to dollars. Guess you'd just have to go to the SF Bay and float them against each other to see what worked out. :) Very nice little press! Maybe when you get the big one completed Mrs. Ox will let you borrow the small one to press your socks. Cheers, Richard

Hi Richard, Thanks for the nice comment. I don't think she will let me mess with the machine once its operational. You know how that goes. By the way how is our tunnel going? Might need some extra scratch to pony up for the rolls on the big boy. All the best, Tom

Hi Tom, interesting to see the small press. I did some industrial espionage when I was asked to make an etching press. At the time, about fifteen years ago, Richebe, the only ( I think) Parisian etching presse builder was using what was described as "duralumin" plates to replace steel ones i think mostly for weight. Recently, I've seen 19mm melamine coated MDF on a 100mm Ø roller, 60mm wide press. I don't know how long it is expected to last, but it would certainly be a cheaper solution! MDF is medium density fibre board, I've not actually seen a high density fibre board, maybe it would be worth investigating. www.weihuaonline.com/Eng/files/DensityFiberboard.pdf Regards, Matthew

Hi Matthew, I'm pretty sure we will be using a 25 mm high pressure phenolic composite for the main bed. We have used the phenolic plate on the small press and it has held up well for longer than the original metal plate. The weigh savings alone makes it attractive as well. Cheers, Tom

oxtoolco Tom, I'm in the process of planning my own 12" press. I was also looking to use phenolic laminate but am not sure on what thickness to use. Is you press bed still holding up and if so, what thickness did you use for the baby press? Cheers Peter
