I'm convinced that Ian is the only human being capable of making a review of literally anything, and making it funny and entertaining. The idea of someone reviewing a random, tiny mall is something only he can pull off.

As a life-long Everett citizen, I can honestly say this is the best endorsement our poor mall has had in roughly 15 years. Worked there when it still had a Macy's and a Sears, despite all the odds it keeps on trucking lol. Great video Ian.

To be fair I don't think KZbin is Ian's Primary source of income. Making a livable income on KZbin is very difficult. Even with game/film/food theory which is one of the biggest channel groupingss on the block Matt patt has claimed that his wife's job typically brings in a better income for their family then his youtube and merch profits although he also has a lot of employees so that might be a bad example.

@@angrynoodletwentyfive6463 It's so weird because some KZbinrs say that KZbin is more than enough to live on with 200,000 subscribers and other with like a million will say they are just getting by. It must depend on how many people you employ, where you live, stuff like that. But it's honestly confusing trying to sort things out from behind the scenes

These little slice of life mini docs want to make me actually go out and visit my local arcade, or eat weird ramen tacos, or watch a crap ton of VHS nonsense blindly, instead of being balled up in my dark room doing nothing but playing the same three video games I've had for years or brainlessly binging fluffy Reddit content. It's always a dopamine delight to see a notification of yours pop up and I regularly find myself watching your content as I draw or paint. Everett mall story: I went there once almost 20 years ago to meet a friend, and walked through while i waited for them. I saw absolutely zero customers, and i mean zero. I was the only one i saw. No mall cops either. It was like how i imagine a North Korean mall is: nice looking, but nobody to shop in it. The only people i saw were cashiers, looking out at me as i walked by, astonished to see a customer. I got a meal(i think it was a slice of Sbarros) and went into the restroom to wash my hands. Just after i enter, a teenage boy, who i didnt see when i walked into the bathroom, comes in and says "Hey, you need anything? I can get you whatever you want." Not needing any heroin, I said "no, im good" and without saying another word he turned around and left. I walked out 10 seconds after him, and he was completely gone, like he disappeared into a portal. Anyone whos been there that i tell that story to, they say "yeah that sounds like Everett mall for ya."

For those who didn't grow up in the 80's/90's, it's really hard to describe how different "THE MALL!!!" of yesteryear was compared to the "the mall" of today. Back before kids had cell phones or instant messenger(way before social media sites like myspace, facebook, twitter, etc), kids between the ages of 12 & 18 gathered at the mall. although modern day malls feel like commercial ghost towns, they used to be the epicenter of social life outside of school for urban/suburban teens. my local mall of choice was called the Clackamas Town Center in southeast Portland. It had an 8 screen cinema, a solid food court with all the classics(Hot Dog on a Stick, Orange Julius, Sbarro, Famous Amos, Hagen Das, & more), there was a fantastic arcade(& this was when arcades were really popular so it had tons of great games) called the Electric Palace, it had the standard department stores(Sears, Meir & Frank, JC Penny, & so on) but it also had a spattering of weird kiosks selling oddities like Magic Eye Posters or Chia Pets, & of course plenty of those quintessential mall standbys such as Sam Goody, Sharper Image, Kay-Bee Toys, Suncoast Video, Spencer's Gifts, Hot Topic, Swatch, i could go on & on. i guess if i had to recommend any movies that properly convey the 80's/90's mall experience they would be Mallrats, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, & Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure.
@FrenkTheJoy
@FrenkTheJoy Жыл бұрын
I honestly feel so bad for kids these day who don't get to experience that quintessential, um, experience of going to the mall, reading all the latest manga at Waldenbooks, or if your mall was really nice there'd be a Barnes and Noble connected to it, and then not buying any of the manga you read, feeling up the geodes at Natural Wonders, looking at the latest anime merch at Hot Topic and mentally checking off which ones to ask your mom to buy you later, seeing what new Pokemon toys were in Kay Bee Toys, getting chicken nuggets from the food court, and then hanging out in the arcade with your friends for 30 minutes while you waited for your movie's showtime, and knowing your mom only let you go because your report card was good and because you have this incredibly cheap phone that you can only make like 4 phone calls from each month so it's JUST FOR EMERGENCIES and you better call her as soon as the movie finishes. I mean I do still see groups of stupid teenagers in the mall today, but they're missing out. Last time I was at a mall there was this group of teen girls and you could tell that it was like a Mean Girls situation where one of them was the popular girl and the other three hated her but were hanging out with her for teenager-related reasons. They were right at the table next to us at the food court, so it's not like I was stalking them. Just happened to overhear them and see their faces while eating my pretzel dog.

THEMALL! was kinda a polarising experience to me back in the day. Bad was sitting in a smoky car for an entire hour, and then being dragged around all the stores I didn't wanna to be at to try on clothes I rarely wanted to wear because my mother had terrible taste and oft refused my choices. But good was the movies and getting to loiter in book stores gawking at all the expensive things - there once was a particular mall with a particular bookstore I'd happily book my way towards despite it being on fourth floor and no elevators. And sometimes the cheap thrill of glass floors on the highmost storeys...

I'm sad the malls are dying. I had so many nostalgic adolescent hours spent traipsing around those halls. Weird dates that always inevitably ended up in the adult section of Spencer's. Sneaking into R rated movies with my friends. Loitering in Barnes and Noble, chugging coffee and inhaling entire books for free. Even my first successful shoplifting experience. It was a snow obsidian necklace from one of those hippie stores, by the way. I stole a rock. 😑

@@shards-of-glass-man Heheh. _" . . . A particular bookstore I'd happily book my way towards."_ That sounds like some goofy slogan for a Scholastic book faire. But I get what you mean, the mall bookstores were always lots of fun to hang out in. Especially if they had a really good coffee shop. Sadly, even bookstores are dying off these days. But I'm simple like that, I enjoy a good physical book to curl up with. Nothing smells better than a well-loved novel, imho. I also agree, going clothes shopping with a parent was an exercise in pure misery. My mother also had an inappropriate taste in clothes. She wanted me to dress like a thirty-something office worker. And since I had a distorted body-image at the time, thanks to my blooming puberty, it always felt like I was a circus freak on a leash being taken on parade.

That depends on the mall. I was born in 98', and whenever I go to a mall in my city or the neighboring one it's always filled to the brim with young adults, kids and teenagers. The one from neighboring city has a big arcade, two cinemas, three video game stores, a whole floor dedicated to food corners like McDonald's, Burger King, sushi bars, two pizzerias, three restaurants(one vegan only) etc and that floor is always so full you most likely won't be able to find a place to sit at and eat your burger in peace despite the tables being set on two different floors. BaCk In YoUr DaYs argument means nothing here(not to mention that argument is dumb despite what's it talking about.), the malls just have to be set where a lot of people are- that would be places where tourism is big, close to the town square, next to a train station, big cities with a lot of mixed cultures and where there isn't anything more "interesting" around to spend your time in.

Good lord, this bought back some memories. I grew up in Everett, so it was sorta freaky to see how it's changed since the 80s/90s. Where you first walked in where it was all black and boarded up used to be where the old arcade was (I wanna say it was called Casey's Arcade?) And it was HUGE. Plus they had a ticket and prize counter system. Many fond memories of being an 8 year old girl and stomping bewildered teen boys' egos in Street Fighter there. Also sad to see the comic shop I bought my first manga from is gone.
