A primate, even a full sized one, is a group animal, its not meant to be by itself. The reason he panicks when you put him down or a foot away is because he thinks the hours of solitary confinement are about to begin again every time. A dog or cat can tolerate a bit of solitude. A monkey is a familial-group animal. They sleep huddled together for warmth in the upper branches of trees at night in the wild and they are always interacting with their troop....AND THATS JUST A BABY its meant to be with its mother. That's one of a thousand reasons why it's illegal to own a baby monkey as a pet in those countries.
