The Encore is Buick's best-selling vehicle, and it's also an odd duck. Buick positions their small CUV between inexpensive options like the EcoSport and full-luxury brands like the Q3 or GLA, but that means its also a price-competitor to a RAV4 or CRV. So if you're looking for something a little more compact than a RAV, a little more luxurious than a Kona and easier on the wallet than a BMW or Volvo, the Buick is an intriguing option.

Thanks for a great review! I am a new owner of this car. So far, I am really liking it! I opted for the AWD version with the 9-speed transmission. I was looking for a commuter car that had a bit more luxury with great tech features, and that is exactly what I got.

@Jonathan I have found it to be pretty responsive and actually quite zippy. Seems like a silly word to describe it, but that's what it is. I mean it's never going to win a race, but if you want a comfortable, semi-premium feel with good gas mileage, this is it. Overall, I'm really happy with my choice.

Mark Miller I’m neutral to this, though personally I’d never choose less than 4 cylinders. A previous case of Buick in Chinese market: sales number was cut down dramatically after a model was updated with I3, and then saved back after I4 returned to the model.

@John Rutherford Correct...the European model of taxing by emission/engine size isn't a "thing" in the USA. For the most part, you pay sales tax one time at purchase to the state and then registration every year, which does vary by vehicle weight (essentially cars are the same, trucks pay on weight). I think it would be awesome if something like it was adopted on primary use vehicles as it would remove most of the gigantic brodozer trucks and it's ilk from the road. Of course, this comment will immediately get obscene replies from the mothertruckers on the internet.

Honestly comparing to the competition this vehicle makes a really compelling argument since it is nicer than most of the mainstream competitors in the the CUV lineup but it definitely gives the sedans that remain a run for their money. If you need something bigger look elsewhere but if you needs a comfortable car with good fuel economy this is for you. It even has good utility for its size and price until at least the Santa Cruz and Maverick come out.

The white pearl tri-coat paint is beautiful, but delamination is a problem with Buick paints. Needs a turbocharged 1.8L 4 cylinder and more sound deadening. Lots of tire roar at highway speeds and thrashy 3-cylinder engine noise under load. Not as quiet as buyers expect for a Buick. Well done as always, Alex! Very thorough.
@LGMinnesota

Paint issues are prevalent in other brands, look at mazda, talk to mazda owners, in 1 year paint is peeling on CX5s. Reason is environmental standards are forcing makers to use different paint then in previous years where it was better.

When looking for a luxurious, tall & small, quiet, comfortable, reliable AWD SUV vs. sportiness and space the Encore GX has features and reliability that are hard to match at this price in this sub-compact 170-173" length AWD SUV class. It is the ideal vehicle for a single person, DINKS or an empty nester couple. With selective options, the top of the line Essence trim provides a 64" height close to what you get in the compact class (not Mazda, Lexus, Mercedes) a luxurious interior with real leather seats (not Lexus, Kia), a comfortable ride with IRS (not Mazda), quiet tuning with sound deadening, a real 9 speed automatic transmission (vs. rubberbandy CVT in the Nissan, Honda, Lexus, Subaru, Kia or less smooth DCT in Mercedes, Kia), full complement of safety features including Automatic Emergency Braking and Side Blind Zone Alert, memory driver's seat & mirrors, my fav feature (not Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Subaru), power liftgate (not Subaru, Nissan, Kia, Hyundai), power passenger seat, panoramic moonroof (not Lexus, Mazda, Honda, Nissan, Subaru, Kia) heated seats & steering wheel, large touch screen (not Mazda) with navigation, HD backup camera, LED headlights & tail lights and an upgraded Bose stereo all for about $31K with current discounts. The 2020 Jeep Compass can now provide these features, but is after a different buyer and has suspect reliability, and Volvo, BMW and Audi can't come within $10-15K the price. And no, I don't work for Buick or sell them...lol.

Joe Ashton: This was a great post. Clearly someone has done my research for me! Still debating between this and a regular Encore though, my garage space being what it is. The new Encore's are pretty much stripped. No heated seats available! They are putting a 155 hp engine in the 2021's (some of them). Finding a used Encore with the 153 hp engine and 'luxury options' like heated seats, steering wheel and safety tech, is difficult. I find it odd that there are no KZbin reviews of the AWD138 hp original Encore on KZbin. I wonder if the same will happen with the GX. There will just be reviews for the FWD CVT, which is lighter and will probably drive 'more nimbly' than the AWD 9 speed. Makes me wonder if the AWD 9 speed makes this a dog. Anyhow, great comment.

The Buick Encore GX is a Asian focused vehicle, especially with Buicks success in China. The Trailblazer, which in its top trims is just as nice (and looks better and gets better fuel economy), is the American focused version of the twins. Personally I think the Trailblazer beats this in every way, and unless you really like the GX's styling, the Trailblazer wins. Also just do yourself a favor and get the 9 speed with AWD, Don't curse yourself with a CVT.

Looks are subjective. Both are nice designs. The Chevy looks more rugged/outdoorsy, but the Buick looks more polished/upscale to me. As for the Chevy being just as nice, I will have to disagree. The Buick has more soft touch materials and has Quiet Tuning, giving it a more premium interior vibe and quiet ride. Comparably equipped, the Buick is less expensive too (perhaps due to incentives). The 9 speed auto only comes with AWD and not everybody wants to spend the extra cash or needs AWD. MPG on the AWD is also worse than on FWD. MPG is almost identical, regardless of engine and drivetrain. They are both good choices...

Nice summary. A couple interesting points. The 2021 Trailblazer has wireless Android Auto and Apple Car play which isn’t available at all on the more upscale 2020 Buick twin. I assume GM will fix that with the 2021 Encore GX? You also repeatedly listed the CVT as a negative yet you only have to get the AWD version to a get a great 9 speed automatic that’s at least as good as what the Volvo and Germans offer and far nicer than the AWD Toyota, Nissan, and the CVT and clunky much hated dual clutch in the Hyundai/Kia competition. It’s also worth noting you can get adaptive cruise in the midline trims of both this and the Trailblazer while it requires the top trim of much of the competition. You can also get a 360 degree camera system which much of the competition doesn’t have at any price. The XC40, in particular, gets obscenely expensive if those two options are must have items. Hyundai/Kia only have adaptive cruise on the top trims with the nasty dual clutch and no 360 vision at all. Finally, GM has $3250 cash back on the 2020 Encore GX right now which makes it a better deal than a similarly equipped 2021 Trailblazer and you get the much nicer interior, better sound insulation, a more upscale brand, etc. but no wireless phone connectivity.

I really believe that Buick has figured out the small-ute class. Since the Encore debuted, it has had a devout following. Unlike what Cadillac has done with the XT4, they're not trying to deliver the GX as a true alternative to a BMX X1 or Benz GLA. It is simply a polished everyday small CUV that does what buyers ask. I see a lot of seniors driving Encores, and I can see why. They've gone from Town Cars and Fleetwoods to Encores and others because, outside of sheer size and roominess, they offer refinement and hushed driving dynamics that they require. I will be curious to see how the 3cyl holds up over time though. It brings back Geo Metro memories for me.😬

I have both the Honda HR-V Sport AWD and this Encore GX AWD and I like the handling of the Honda HR-V around corner or winding road better. The front suspension of this is a bit soft and floating vs. the HR-V. The Encore transmission is lacking too because some it seems like its in a tall gear and the motor lacking power as if you accidently shift into taller gear of a manual and it did not have enough power/speed on low speed. Lastly, the C-pillar so think and obstruction as you turns left or right. Buick should have made it thinner

@@LGMinnesota So ... I bought 2 GXs , 1-1.2L and 1-1.3L engines, having traded my Encore up to the GX for about $5K. Highly recommend doing this because both versions get 30+ mpg, the technology offered makes them more drivable and safer, and the small extra width is noticeable and the ride more solid. Both 3 cyl. engines surprised me with power to push you into the seat and are selling for about the same $$ as the 2020 Encore. The armrest and cup holders are much more comfortable and I recommend the power lift gate too. Yes, it's only 1 inch wider, but the cabin design does a lot with that inch! If you go to a bigger car, prepare to get 25 -27 mpg. The "larger" engine will yield 2-3 mpg. more, but regardless I get 32-35 mph. on the highway with the 1.2L version and have left the 28 mpg. driving experience for good. I live in a rural area, so if you live in a major traffic area, the city driving will cost you more gas. The "auto-stop" helps this a lot and recently driving the highway without the A/C for brief periods sent the avg. mpg. well into the 40's for the trip - it's starting to get colder now. These cars a amazing .... good luck.

Mazda CX30 cargo area is small compared to Encore GX due to the shape of the CX30. I do agree that a Mazda CX-5 at 36k is a better choice than GX, bigger and larger engine. However, according to Truecar.com, the average transaction price of the GX after dealer discounts and GM rebates is closer to $21k. At 21k, GX is certainly the better choice than CX5.
