Different culture. It was also very Hard for me to get used to it, especially as a Hungarian person. We love "small talks" and when we ask someone "how are you?" the only appropriate answer is to tell your centire life since the moment of concievemnet up until the present. If you see your future, you tell it too, and if you remember your past lives you tell it also. 😁 The "fine thanks, and you?" as an answer is actually considered to be rude here. We need these "small talks" and it was a shock for me how different does it work in Germany. 🤷♀️

Sometimes. But it is really a cultural thing. Hungarian people have always had a hard life, we (the average people) are living in tough circumstances... And by our version of "small talks" we share also our hardships and problems, and there's always someone who can help/who has right solution. A problem shared is a problem sloved kind of thing. Something similar happened to me while travelling Canada during my gap year. I went up to the cashier and asked: "How are you doing?" (cause that's apparently what North Americans do). But with this tiny question I kickstarted a whole monologue about how her mother had died and had left her nothing, but and I quote "THIS F***ING RING*. Then she went on about how unfair the inheritance distribution in her mother's will was and how nothing but this Ring was left to her. Her rant probably only lasted 2min, but from my point of view it took ages and I felt drained after that. After this traumatic experience, my shocked german self stuck to a simple "Hello", "Hi" or "Good morning" as a greeting and to "Have a good day" ONLY.

Oh you poor thing, suffering so much for around 2 minutes. If I was a visitor, I would find it very interesting. And if it was only two mjnutes- ka pai! I gather you have never been through the trauma of losing a parent, then having nothing much to remind you of your Mum. I sense you are far too young to go through something harrowing like that. If she reads your comment, she will be as shocked as I am and you apparently were. One thing I have heard a lot from Germans is that Americans, Canadians and Aussies are 2 faced. We aren't. We take an interest in others and are quite laid back generally.
@BrideOfTheDawn Жыл бұрын
@@barbsmart7373h. I think it's a bit reaching to speak for all Americans, especially in this time period when many Americans would like to see other Americans suffer simply for difference of political opinion. Generalized statements are evil. We shouldn't generalize anything. It's also kind of hypocritical to talk about how caring we are while actively dissing and shaming someone from a different culture who has different values. You don't sound an awful lot like a voice of "open minded love and compassion." But, to be honest, I don't think it's appropriate to spill your woes to a stranger like that either. I wouldn't want to hear someone complain about their life or their problems either; as a parent-less foster child being forced to listen to someone complain about parents having left them ANYTHING because I should care about others doesn't really compute. And that doesn't make me a bad person. It just means you should talk to a friend, not a stranger. The way I see it is like this: we all have our own unique problems and woes. You never know how you complaining about your woes might hurt others due to their own. If you need a shoulder to cry on or ears to hear you, you should probably speak to a friend, or a therapist. This is why, as an American, I do not ask people "how are you?". I say hi if I say anything at all.

What I've gathered from these shorts is that the average German is very stoic and direct but overall they are very genuine accommodating people. As an American, the average citizen wouldn't even spare a few seconds to think about how you feel. Even if they do, that doesn't mean they're going to be nice to you beyond face value. And its not because its just how they are, in my experience its because many Americans are self absorbed. Thinking life revolves around them. Not just trying their best to live a chill unproblematic existence like the German you portray.

I would actually see it rude from her point of view (I'm Russian, living in Germany). Why is this person judging that I'm early? Are they following me? Is that even their business? So, smiling was actually very nice from her (I guess she was just shocked). I feel it's ok to say "Hallo" to neighbours when you meet them in the elevator or near the house. And that is more than enough. If you want to actually talk, then try to build real relationships. Start from "My name is... I live on 3rd floor. It is nice to meet you". Otherwise why would you even talk to a person if you are not going to invest in the relationship?
