I live in the north-east of France. Before Chernobyl, there were no more thyroid problems in my region than elsewhere in the world. Since Chernobyl, thyroid problems have exploded in the region compared to world standards. I myself have had hypothyroidism for 10 years even though there is no family precedent. Many doctors unofficially believe that many of these thyroid problems over the past 30 years stem from Chernobyl. We will probably never have the answer...

There are in fact still people living in exclusion zone. I know a guy who is constantly providing humanitarian aid to them. They created a series of movies called "the Last people of Chernobyl" - available on Amazon Prime an YT

This show, especially the final episode, is almost like a documentary. Very well done.

Hard to believe that we as a species even survived this.

We survived by the grace of good men willing to do the right thing in an environment that rewarded corruption and punished the righteous. Were that we were all so blessed with such force of will in trying times. Most of us will never be put into a position to know if we have it in us to do what needs to be done. Many of us are lucky in that respect.

I really like the way the makers of the show added the notes at the end to cover some of the things they got wrong, simplified, or made more dramatic...I just wish they had done more of that, or been more honest. For example, they say that "it has been reported" that everyone on the "Bridge of Death" died...but those reports are very much NOT true....so technically, they are being truthful, bur not quite. Other things they do not admit to, I can understand...such as the fact that Legasov was not even at the trial of Dyatlov and company...but it is kind of necessary to turn him into a kind of hero figure and have him do much more than he really did so that the story can be simplified enough for most folks to keep track of. I assume by now you have read the History vs Hollywood article, so you know most of the truth...at least I hope that is the case.

If you're looking for more high-quality drama series about past events, 'Dopesick' about the opioid crisis, 'Narcos' about the drug war in Colombia and 'Mindhunter' about the FBI learning to understand serial killers are excellent. (Though if you'd rather watch something slightly less depressing, there's a series that examines what might have happened if the Russians had been first to land on the Moon called For All Mankind that is really really good.) Anyway, thanks again for sharing, I've really enjoyed watching your takes as always, and Chernobyl remains both terrifying and fascinating. Perhaps if you find some good documentaries on it on KZbin or the like, you could share with us. :)

The show does not really show how the Soviet State knew about the multiple design flaws of the RBMK reactor design from the very beginning of its development and testing back in the 1960s, and covered up in full or in part several serious incidents with the RBMK reactors in Leningrad and at Chernobyl itself before the main disaster. It is not surprising that they could not really convey that information, but it is still important to know. So in the scene at the trial where the Khomyuk testifies that the first link in the chain of the disaster was only 10 hours before the explosion, she would actually have been lying if she was real, because the first link in that chain was in the 1960s.

The first link in the immediate chain is what was ment, Otherwise it could be considered to be when man discovered fire or even earlier when life first emerged on earth.. lol. Everything is a link if you look at it in the right way, Also the design of the RBKM reactors is equally a link in the other reactors elsewhere not exploding. The first link in a disaster really has to be considered the thing that sets it apart from the non-disasters that didn't happen..

@@Markus117d Exactly...so the first link in the chain is when the Soviets decided to use unsafe reactors without any containment structures, because no other nation uses reactors with a positive void coefficient for power generation, and no other country builds reactors without containment structures for power generation. Thanks for confirming that I was correct.

@brudnick39 In a way true, But my point is more that, In investing a car accident for example, Yes there was something in it's design that contributed to the accident, But really the first link in the accident was the fact that the driver was travelling at 90mph with no tires left, As no other cars with that flaw were crashed, Because their owner's weren't doing something really dangerous with them.. lol..

@@Markus117d A better analogy to a car situation would be if the manufacturer knowingly mass produced a car with two flaws...first that it was possible under some circumstances for the throttle system to become uncontrollable and for the engine to accelerate by itself AND a fault with the braking system where pushing the brakes made the care speed up instead of slow down. In that situation, if there was a crash that involved both faults coming into play, then the manufacturer's decision to mass produce the car while hiding both faults would be considered the first link in the chain of disaster. Other countries tried water cooled graphite moderated reactors in the 1960s or earlier, and there were even large accidents with those types of reactors in other countries, and so no other country was moronic enough to deploy numbers of those reactors for the purpose of power generation....only the USSR made that choice.💯

The thing is, Chernobyl will always be a potential threat. War, natural disaster, forest fires in that region would be disastrous. I'm hoping people can come up with a better solution than the "band aide" they stuck over it. I do think some of the current nature docs about the exclusion zones are very interesting!

As distressing as it is, I would argue it was necessary to show the animals in the last episode, Otherwise it doesn't really convey the personal cost to the people with this task or a major part of the cost of the disaster overall..
