I have no words right now. This has to be one of my favorite themes from anything ever because of how Mitsuda implemented it throughout the whole game. I had no idea it was going to be the main theme from just hearing it as the music box song the very first time (actually even before that a motif from it plays at the end of the opening cutscene) nor from any of the other times it shows up very subtly, and then the ending breaks out into a full blown lyrical masterpiece. The whole idea of fragments of a mirror coming together to create a whole really describes what this song and this entire game even means in the first place. You experience the song in little broken pieces throughout the whole game and you can’t really tell what the song is there for or what it refers to. Similarly, the story keeps dropping little fragments that don’t entirely make sense and it keeps you wondering how all of it will fit together. And THEN--- MEGA SPOILERS UBER DUPER SPOILERINO SPOIL TIME It turns out the entire human race are just fragments of this unfeeling machine trying to regenerate itself enough to seek revenge on its creators, so the theme reappears there as well, but super nihilistically. “Is this it? This is the meaning of our existence? This is the whole that appears when all the pieces are restored together?” The answer you end up giving is “no, there is something greater than even this.” Fei ends up defying his fate, and the fragments of humankind come together to form something new, something more important than the mere sum of their parts. They overcome their tragic origins to chart a new future of their own choosing, free from the arbitrary destiny coldly given to them at birth. The song that then closes out the game, this song, brings such a warm, cleansing feeling, mixed with the joy of victory against overwhelming odds, and the whole thing just suddenly comes together. The theme of humans being mere conscious matter who’s only destiny is to rejoin the mass collective unconscious upon their death certainly fits the pattern of broken pieces of a mirror, but the image reflected in it is ugly and meaningless. The entire point of the game is that humanity is far more beautiful and important than just the mere facts of our existence. It’s indescribable with only mere words, and that’s exactly why this song is here. It follows you along your entire journey, guiding you the whole way, and it’s right there with you at the very end, and now you can finally see that image in the mirror when all the pieces have been restored. I don’t know what any of it means, but what I do know is this: it’s utterly beautiful and worth protecting. Thank you so much for making this cover, truly. You guys knocked it out of the park. I’ve heard that Mitsuda almost died trying to complete the score for this game, and I think I understand why now. Hopefully you guys took your time on this one lol.

I love your interpretation! It's been a really long time since I last played Xenogears and your thoughts make me really want to go back and re-experience it with these ideas in mind. Probably the most important game in the history of games and the most important story ever told............ I'm an English MA and there's nothing that compares to this game. Babylon Revisited probably holds a candle... but Xenogears.... LIVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
