As a Vietnamese who was born in Vietnam, currently living in the States, I used to see a lot of Honda Waves and other similarly styled motorcycles known as 'underbones'. It really is part of Southeast Asian culture since most people rely on it as a cheap mode of transportation if they couldn't afford a car. I've also seen an old Wave - circa 90's or early 2000's - in the US.

I never thought someone from NZ could import a Honda Wave there.

I'm very happy for you. In my humble opinion, this is the best version of the Wave. Dual headlights, massive underseat storage,.... Unlike the fancier bikes I prefer the simple, charming air-cooled 125cc engine. The layout of the exhaust is also more resilient against issues when taking it offroad compared to the later 2018 revision. If you convert the headlights to LED (you'll need to update the charging system), you get brighter lights too. I personally also prefer the looks. The newer one is more plain which I find kinda boring. I'm grateful that I was able to bring my 2014 Wave 125i into Australia from Thailand where I also lived for 2 years. When I lived there, I was thinking long and hard about the type of bike I wanted buy to tour South East Asia and at some point around the world. No other bike is as versatile as this version.

I'm watching these Wave videos because I'm returning to the Philippines in a couple of months and I want to get a bike there. I ride a 2006 HD Springer in the US and I want something small, cheap and cheerful. In other words, the opposite of what I have here. The engines in the Waves are almost identical to the Honda Fury 50cc I had in the 70s as a kid. I learned how to work on bikes from owning that Hoda..

I've been in the Philippines for a year now. I ended up buying a Honda XR15O in January '23. I've been having a lot of fun upgrading it. It's perfect for me here, but I still have a soft spot for a simple cheap underbone. They are super common here, cheap to buy and run and fun to ride. I rode a friend's Honda XRM and also the Honda ADV 160 scooter. As cheap as they are, I may get a Wave one of these days..

It sucks you can’t get a Wave in the US either. I too got the c90/wave bug in SE Asia. The super cub is available in the US, but it’s a silly retro styled thing and is expensive. It’s funny how less expensive these things are in Asia. Like $1700 vs $3700. I’m mad about it.
@SmallBikeStuff4 жыл бұрын
For sure! I agree totally. I guess these are built to Thai standards; which doesn't mean they are less safe. But it does mean they don't conform to some countries standards without things like ABS. Because of this they can be cheaper for their home market. Many countries won't allow them to be imported now. This particular one was imported to New Zealand in 2016, but I managed to get a hold of it. The legality process in NZ was almost impossible - but eventually managed to get it a license plate. Thankfully!

Because everyone on motorcycle community will looking for bigger bike. Like, faaar bigger. Even Ninja 400 is considered as beginner bike in US. If you want US spec of Wave. Go looking for 150 variant (sharing engine with CRF150F). The 125 variant is barely make 60-70 mph and always be treated as 2-wheels Miata
@williamnale78352 жыл бұрын
Unless you live in a congested city in the US where traffic can't get up to speed, these type of bikes just can't keep up with the traffic here in the US. I'm in Texas and they drive like maniacs, especially those jacked up bro dozer pickup drivers. My HD does fine here though. I'm looking forward to riding in the PI on something smaller where the traffic is slower.

A Malaysian bloke from the future (2023), I was considering Honda Dash or Honda Wave and came across your review. Most likely I am getting a Wave for funny reason really. I think it is the only bike with a an 8L compartment that can fit a helmet. Yup you don't need an aftermarket box that you mount on the back, I kind of hate that :-) I am going to the shop tomorrow morning. I don't about any other countries, but in Malaysia with any bike purchase you'll get a free helmet, raincoat and a wheel lock. Any shop you go mate! no kidding. Till then, ride safe.

Living in Vietnam now, and yes.. I'm an avid rider of the honda future/wave125 - i have the same model as you 2015 ❤ it to bits. I've met loads shops - can mod the bike to basically anything (abs, elec key, engine cc you name it) So, technically you could install abs and make it street legal in NZ. An abs system on me wave 125 would be about 250$ usd. Fyi

Hello there mate! In Sweden we have a very similar one called the honda innova with the same engine and all. What would you say is the highest comfortable cruise speed? and what can it do in inclines? thank you :) I consider getting one once i aquire my motorcykle license. I ride a yamaha mt at the driver school btw, haha
@ginnfreecs29943 жыл бұрын
here in southeast asia (im from the PH) we have those and from my experience its around 60-80kph it depends on model like either 110cc or 125cc. and its semi automatic so on the incline you can go low gear. but i suggest slightly upgrade it, muffler, topbox, breaks and lights, those are really really easy to find and have lots of youtube vids for upgrade for whatever want you will have.
