In the Navy whenever we took something apart on the helicopters it would get torqued together then after a number of flight hours we would do a torque check to make sure nothing is moving. So I consider what you did on the heads to be a Torque Check. Great job

With this large engine can you order the correct gasket? You have put so much time and effort into this project make it perfect as you usually do. Thanks for sharing.

Permatex one minute gasket, and use a few pieces of gasket paper on the corners to act as a spacer so you retain the original gasket thickness. That’s what I do when I can’t get the proper gaskets, works like a charm and you can even trim the material after and you won’t even be able to tell it’s not original.

I would put a bit of gasket at each bolt as a spacer though. So you cant bend the cover.

I'm glad to see this project again. I wasn't sure if it had fallen by the wayside. It's funny though, how often we can fall foul of things like gaskets that we think should fit, only to find out that they don't. We even had a problem with a Ford V6 Cologne engine and its water pump. Same engine, two different pumps. Even the guy at the parts depot said "I'll laid odds on this being the one" and gave us the most commonly found pump. Get back home - wrong pump. It all fitted up apart from one bolt hole and a water bypass channel. It happens! Can't wait to see/hear this puppy having fun on your load bank!

So far this has been an interesting project and will be waiting for the installation of whatever gov assembly you choose. One thing I always do with VC gaskets is use sealer to glue them onto the cover, but on the side you DON'T want to stick I use a little oil or light grease on the surface so the gasket doesn't break on the next service. You can also use a VERY light coating of silicone sealer and let it dry for 10 minutes before installing. Same idea. The gasket won't stick to the head next time you pull the VC.

Lifter valley cover sealing blues: Grey Silicone is your friend. Use a fine bead tho. We use it on diffs, timing covers and other oil exposed parts all the time and it stands up pretty good to all, even the slippery synthetic ones. 👌😎

They made this engine in a 844 ci also. I. Western Kansas these were used for irrigation engines. One man who was a service man at Seyb Tucker had served in the Army where they used the engine in Army Trucks. Irrigation engines ran off natural gas the military I think were gasoline. At one time we ran six of these engines. There was a factory in Tulsa I think it was Roline or LeRoy just west of downtown on the north side of the Arkansas River They were bought out by another company then discontinued to get rid of the competition in the early 70s

You must be going to use an electrical governor. Seems like more dependable to me and better load following. It will be interesting to see if it will keep to 1/4 cycle to 1/10th cycle accuracy. When the military ran the huge 16 cylinder behemoth gensets if there was a power failure in the Seattle area McCord Air force base radars had these gensets up and running in less than a tenth of a second matching the wavefront of the cycle exactly so the radar would show no glitches. Air start.

@patagualianmostly7437

I'd go with that....with such a "traditional" type engine. But then his "locating" silicone on the upperside wouldn't work so good. So I'd go for the soak......place the gasket on the heads...and lower the covers down. You could always use threaded bar (or simple bar dowels) to keep the gasket in place.... replace them one at a time with the correct cover fixings.... Sorted. Cheers.

I know it may be too late. But I'd really like to see that Gov delete with a longer bolt thats castleated. Or just nick a longer nut down to install a cotter pin. OR flip the bolt and just drill the end to accept a pin so that no matter what it is prevented from coming apart in the galley. The parts im not so much bothered about but the loss of oil pressure is a concern.
@kooldoozer

All of what you said, and I just don't like a 1/4" bolt inside the engine. I know there is no load on it, but the hard vibration and harmonics with drive gears and combustion events, that is a lot for a 1/4" bolt to endure, just from being present in that environment. I would go with a 3/8" bolt, just to be sure vibration does not start a metal fatigue situation. I am an engineer and I know it 1/4" is strong enough, but I also have seen a lot of weird stuff break when vibration was present.

@@kooldoozer Agreed, we recently installed VFD’s on some 500hp screw compressors used in anhydrous ammonia refrigeration system. In 6 months we’ve had at least a half dozen schedule 80 nipples crack and start leaking. When those compressors run through 30-50hz it picks up some nasty harmonics. Patagualian Mostly my understanding is that every click adds a little torque. The equipment I service has specific torque specifications to keep stuff from coming loose. Over torquing a fastener adds undue stress on the fastener, possibly causing premature failure.

Might be because most sealants that I have used will leak eventually.Case in point Hyster forklift,where the engine and transmission were joined,factory used a sealant instead of gasket,every one of them leaked after a few months.We would even ckeck the torque on the attaching bolts,before putting new machine in service,did not make any difference.Engine valve covers were also factory installed with sealant,would start leaking,only way to stop leaks was to install gaskets.
