Smallest Calf I’ve Ever Seen!

Recently, I had to assist my neighbor with a newborn calf. This by far is one of the smallest calves I’ve ever seen. If I was to guess her weight I would say it’s probably right around 40 pounds. #baby #animals #cow #farming #shortsfeed

The first thing I noticed is how relaxed the calf's face is. No nostril flaring at all, so even if it is small, it's not premature because it's breathing fine.

I was in farming for over 40yrs had cattle but mainly sheep. One way to tell if the calf or lamb is good is when it gets up it has a stretch right away. Always a good sign..

​@lotstodo just depends on the breed of cow. Some do, like these long horns, and they let them grow. Some get them cut short or off when they're calves. Either for handling purposed or because they're of a type which grows back into their skull and can harm them.

Also I have learned over the years with new lambs and calf’s is- after they stand up the do a big stretch. That’s a great sign that they are happy and healthy. Noticed if you have a sick newborn, they won’t stretch when they stand up. Instead they hunch over (along with droopy ears).

Nah. With those horns and being so paranoid about her baby, if he dared approach her first, she'd gore him. She's not a very trusting female... A bit like many millennial mothers now, who think every male is a pedophile, even their kids' father, if they can even remember who he was, as they are often too off their faces on drugs/alcohol to remember b er who they had sex with when they forgot to take their contraceptive, resulting in pregnancy.

I wonder if mother even remembers which bull was her daddy... with raging young heifer hormo n es, they don't really care which guy does it. So long as he gets her pregnant. Very little if any love or romance involved, sorry, for a those sweet romantic nice guys out there..Cows will be cows! And grt what a cow needs, craves so desperately. Sex. Sex. Sex. More bulls. U till she gets pregnant. Then all she craves is her baby. You're a obsolete, out of t he picture after junior comes on to her scene, commanding all her attention. Some males get upset , even angry, aggressive c e sbout this and it can lead to post parturition stress, domestic violence rtc. But females grazing in a field fare better than human females. There's space to flee to, away from raging bulls, typically isolated as ted in other paddocks, for safety, heaps of grass for food. I would never er agree to be a single mother but, if I had no choice, I'd be a cow, rather than a human one...

@BlandsPromisedLandRanch I've have a local freind whe had a line of black hided longhorns the made terrific heifer bulls. They're incredibly hearty. I'm in SE Washington state. Most producers here raise them for roping.

Longhorn babies are usually tiny, compared to other breeds. #40 lbs is normal. We had a huge 2500 lb brangus bull that threw little tiny calves usually in the #50 lb range, but they grew fast and gained well.

Communicate with cattle with soothing calming low tone "Saaaaaah". Gives them reassure that it's all good, while thinking/giving those same loving feelings. "Beastie" is a good loving and accurate nickname for the four-leggeds; never failed me. She felt safe with you or you wouldn't have gotten that close.
