Smallmouth Bass Feeding on Crayfish-Engbretson Underwater Photography

How do bass eat? In this compilation showing several different crayfish being consumed by Smallmouth Bass, you can see how the fish almost always head toward the surface. Small stones, plants, detritus and even parts of the crayfish claws that break off are expelled from the mouth before the crayfish is swallowed.

Siliang Yin I think it's the crawfish escaping out of the fish's mouth.

They are just re-positioning it in their mouths. They swallow it tail-first. Sometimes the crayfish escapes.

Damn those things are huge. I have a pet smallmouth in a 70 gallon tank.. He's only about 6 inches long

When he gets bigger, you should think about letting him go back into the wild. That way he'll be able to grow to his full potential, and he'll have a giant lake to explore and swim around in.

It's usually illegal to release fish that were held captive. Check your laws before releasing that fish if you plan to do so. If not get a bigger tank

Mostly true. However, those laws are designed to prevent the spread of invasive, non native species. They wouldn't apply to local fish being released back into the same waters they were taken from.

Please don't do that. Most of the ones you find in pet stores are non native species. This is how we end up with so many non native crawfish wrecking areas.
