Established in 1906 by Ted Smallwood, The Smallwood Store trading post served a remote and isolated area buying hides, furs, and farm produce in exchange for providing the goods required to survive. Ted Smallwood’s Store was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974, it remained opened until 1982. When the doors were shut, 90% of the original goods remained in the store. In 1990 Ted’s granddaughter reopened the store as a museum and today it serves as a time capsule of Florida pioneer history.
On the western edge of the Everglades and deep in the heart of the Ten Thousand Islands, Chokoloskee Island has been called one of Florida’s last frontiers. At the Historic Smallwood Store you will learn the story of the pioneers who tamed this vast wilderness.
Exploring Florida is vintage documentary series from the early 1990's featuring host Kris Thoemke.

Lynn is my cousin on my fathers side. I’ve been to Chokoluskee a few times and I’ve been to Ted and Mamie’s store more than once. I’ve kayaked in the Ten Thousand Islands also. Am thinking about going there (short drive from Broward) this summer when I’d like to talk to someone who knew my great great Aunt’s daughter Mamie. I know about Ted and many more there like Totch, they’re fascinating people who grew up in interesting times in an amazing place. I also love the Everglades and its environs and we live a stones throw from it. My father grew up amongst some of the House family in Arcadia.

We have been there threetimes over the years. The best are the departement catalogs from the 50ties.Since 2005 we come to Florida to spend our vacation in your wonderfull country.Since the corona crisis, and that it's forbidden to travel into the US, we have to stay home. And really, the Normandie/France in july is not a comparison to Florida. We miss the US. 👍🇺🇸Greatings from Germany
