Parrots are birds that constitute the order Psittaciformes, there are many extant species classified under eight families and three superfamilies, they are native mostly to the Southern hemisphere, the three superfamilies of parrots are Strigopoidea (New Zealand Parrots), Cacatuoidea (Cockatoos), and Psittacoidea (True Parrots) The new zealand parrots (superfamily Strigopoidea) are the most basal of the three parrot superfamilies and are split into two extant families: Nestoridae (Kakas and Kea) and Strigopidae (Kakapo and Fossil Relatives), once a very diverse superfamily, new zealand parrots are now down to four extant species under three genera and two extant families, the Kakapo (Strigops habrotilus) is the only truly flightless parrot species and is the largest of the new zealand parrots, the kakas (genus Nestor) and the kea (Nesopsittacus notabilis) are able to fly unlike the kakapo, as members of the superfamily Strigopoidea are called new zealand parrots, all members of the superfamily are found only in New Zealand The cockatoos (superfamily Cacatuoidea) are native to much of Oceania and small portions of Southeast Asia, cockatoos are split into two extant families: Nymphicidae (Cockatiel and Fossil Relatives) and Cacatuidae (True Cockatoos), the cockatiel (Nymphicus hollandicus) is the smallest living cockatoo species and is the only living member of its genus and the family Nymphicidae, while all of the larger cockatoo species are part of Cacatuidae, the Cacatuidae family is split into three known subfamilies: Eolophinae (Galah and Gang-Gang Cockatoo), Proboscigrinae (Black Cockatoos), and Cacatuinae (White Cockatoos) The true parrots (superfamily Psittacoidea) are the largest and most derived of the three parrot superfamilies, true parrots are present not just in Oceania, but they also entered Asia, Africa, and the New World, true parrots are split into four extant families: Pezoporidae (Typical Oceanian Parrots), Psittaculidae (Asiatic Parrots), Psittacidae (African Parrots), and Aridae (New World Parrots), the Pezoporidae family that contains all true parrot populations native to Oceania is considered the most basal of the four extant families within the superfamily, with Psittacidae that contains all african populations of the superfamily and Aridae that contains all parrot species native to the New World being most closely related to each other and Psittaculidae, which is a family native only to Asia being the sister group to the Psittacidae + Aridae split to the exclusion of Pezoporidae The closest living relatives of the parrots (order Psittaciformes) are the passerines (order Passeriformes), together, the passerines and parrots belong to the clade Psittacopasserae, which belongs to the mirorder Passerimorphae, where the mousebirds (family Coliidae) of the monotypic order Coliiformes are classified under as well, the Passerimorphae mirorder belongs to the Grandorder Coraciopasserea, which groups it with another mirorder known as Coraciimorphae, which includes the orders Trogoniformes (Trogons and Fossil Relatives), Piciformes (Woodpeckers, Honeyguides, Toucans, Barbets, Jacamars, and Puffbirds), and Coraciiformes (Rollers, Kingfishers, Bee-Eaters, Motmots, Todies, Hornbills, Hoopoes, Woodhoopoes, and Scimitarbills) with the latter two orders constituting the clade Picocoraciae and the former being the most basal of the mirorder
