Hm, in my research I found that the Smart Forfour uses the M281 E09 LA turbocharged engine manufactured my Mercedes, which is technically the exact same as the Nissan HR10DE engine and the Renault H4Bt engine because of the joint venture development between Renault/Nissan and Mercedes. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercedes-Benz_M281_engine

There is indirect (port) injection, chain-driven valvetrain and variable timing only on intake camshaft. VAG 3cylinder TSI engines are high-tech in comparison, with it's benefits and downsides.
