Great to see a video detailing all of what was done in the Smart in one video. Early days of Smart Ownership resulted in the Crankshaft Position Sensor Failing, this has since been replaced, along with a new exhaust, I've also undersealed the car, and given it a oil and filter service and plan to do change the oil again in March/April. I've also made the Smart my own with some little styling mods and currently thinking how I can brighten up the interior, it is now my daily car replacing my Citroen C4 Cactus and is just about to click over to 5000 miles, most of that going up and down the A1/M1/M6 attending Car Shows and Smart Owners clubs meets. I've been bitten by the Smart Bug and a huge thank you to Ian and Carly for saving the Smart and giving it a second chance. You Can follow the Adventures of Arnold Smart as he is now known as over on my KZbin Channel.

I must say that I'm most delighted to see that you have found Mrs. Hubnut! (2.0 lol!) I felt for you when you announced your parting with Ms. hubnut (1.0) although it was amicable if i remember right... Ah-hum! Anyhow, focusing on the current!! I wish both yourself and Mrs. Hubnut all the very best for the future! She looks like a wonderful fit for you! Cheers!!

We've just purchased the most economical BMW(?) in the world - a '14-plate 11,000-mile DFSK Loadhopper Panel-van. I've taken it off the road so I can thoroughly clean the underside ready for rust-proofing. It's great fun to drive for such a tiny van. It needs no further work other than to find a cheap BMW badge for the bonnet.

Proper well done bleeding the cooling system, I was on the receiving end of a couple of techs not managing it on one & we ended up with misfires & warning lights galore! I got handed it (in desperation I think, they probably thought I hadn't got a hope!) & it ended up rear wheels chocked, front on the ramp @ a 45 degree angle before the air lock burped out 😂. I borrowed works diesel fourtwo again the other day & noted it has the paddle shifters. On a 0.8 turbodiesel! 😂 Swapping the frame bolts front to rear is a good idea, btw I'll remember that!

I drove some Smart FourTwos. The ones that I drove for signficant time all had paddle shifters on the steering wheel. I would always let up when shifting; it seemed to make it shift pretty well. Maybe the shifting is driven by a servo connected to the intake manifold, so when you let up on the throttle you get a burst of vaccum causing it to actual the automatic clutch?
@HubNut
@HubNut 12 күн бұрын
It's all electronically controlled. The clutch is disengaged and the engine power briefly cut. You don't have to lift your foot at all.
@fsodn
@fsodn 12 күн бұрын
@@HubNut Right, I know you don't *have* to. I didn't test it a statistically significant number of times both ways, but I definitely tried it a few times both leaving the accelerator pedal down and lifting up on it as I shifted. My anecdotal impression definitely agrees with Ms. Hubnut here, is my point. It seemed to me to shift more quickly and more smoothly if I let up on the gas as I shifted with the paddle shifters. I'd assumed there was a vacuum connection but maybe it was just in my head. I don't know that I'll ever be able to make a systematic study of it now. Ten years ago I could have gotten a car2go somewhere and tested it out. Unless I buy one, finding a Smart that I could use for a day is going to be hard. Other than car2go, I don't think they've ever been for rent, certainly not in North America.

Sorry to be negative. Wasn't interested in the Smart car from beginning to end. They sold those bags of utter nonsense here in Canada -- try to find one now. I find it rather fun keeping up with Hubnut eccentricities in the old banger field, and I love the Kenari. Love the old steam railways nd trip to watch an A380 take off. Scratch my head at some of the decisions made on maintenance of the Hubnut fleet, enough to REALLY wonder at times. But the Smart car was out of step from the relatively straightforward old bangers you keep running somehow. It was a typical Mercedes how do we make the most insanely modernly complex and useless piece of rear-engine two seat not really repairable by mortal man vehicular bodge for nothing but a marketing campaign for cheapo watches. And they succeeded in producing one, wind noise and all. It has no soul that I can fathom, it is just a modern "product". Britain is renowned as the home of harmless eccentrics, and I'm glad to hear the Smartcar is getting a new life for one happy chap. To me, however, it is one layer of eccentricity too far, like worshipping a pagan deity. Compared to a 2CV, it's just not in the competition. Compared to the Berlingo or the Asian minicars barring the Daewoo GM nonsense, and the straightforward Aussie Betty, the Smartcar just doesn't fit with Hubnut. Not in my view anyway, so I didn't watch this Smart car medley episode. Couldn't be bothered.

That's a shame. I utterly despise the smart cars as well, but this was a very interesting video regardless; well worth the watch. Also, whether a car is "hubnut" or not is really down to the man himself (and Ms. Hubnut), not really for us to decide.
