I got excited when he said “affordable”. Then I priced one out. $400 for one shade! So far IKEA is the only real possible choice to bad they don’t custom the size and require a hub and even if you fit their shades it’s still $200. Smart blinds are still an over priced world. I guess I’m stuck stretching my arm out and tugging the cord for a few more years.

Sadly, it can be twice as much for Somfy or Levolor, so these are well priced for a custom-sized shade compared to the competition. Still worries me to try any of these with how expensive they are.

@@shawnbailey3553 I’ve been researching the retrofit adapters to make existing blinds/shades smart. That maybe the way to go for interested parties. Purchase a smart adapter and some new blinds that are compatible. You could price out below $100 and have a new look with Homekit setup.

I think you may not be aware of how expensive regular dumb blinds are if you think that $200 for a single window is expensive

I just found your content this evening as I’m going down the rabbit hole of smartifying our new house being built. I’m curious if there’s been any update on the smartwings nano? Also, gotta say I’m loving your content. Clear, concise and well thought out. Your efforts are much appreciated!

I ordered the ones that would connect to SmartThings and it didn’t work for me even with the hub in the same room it would constantly lose connection, when I contacted customer support they said I would need there gateway hub which I didn’t want to have another hub, and when it’s connected through there hub you have to use there app and it doesn’t show up in Alexa as a blind and you can’t voice control it I gave up and just sent them back.

Thanks for the review! I’ve had my eye on Smart Wings because of the cost and solar option, but had no idea they are releasing Thread versions! Very exciting!!

So Brad was paid handsomely to pimp Smartwings. All window treatments have rocketed up in price in 10 years. What’s up with that?

Pretty cool step by step, most KZbinrs just go ahead and show you the product but don't show you the process or the prices. btw the price is pretty reasonable. I don't want to pay 1500$ for one window with other companies.

Wow. The options are awesome and seem better than Eve??? Like solar panel for charging, Thread, remote, etc.

So thankful for this video. I am redoing my garden and want the outdoor smartwings blinds. But now I’ll make sure to get thread. I swapped out every piece of BT gear from my smart home and was super bummed to have to get BT blinds, but now I am relieved.

Some smart blinds have night and day automations you can make biased on light received by the solar panel, why hasn't anyone invented a hub that will talk to all devices and determines their actions through out the day biased on weather, sunlight, motion, presence? "the ultimate trigger device" If i was a company that had those means I'd be the richest one.
@tomrwills
@tomrwills Жыл бұрын
They do. You just buy sensors and then create an automation based on the sensor.
@phuckinggraphicdripdotcom
@phuckinggraphicdripdotcom Жыл бұрын
@@tomrwills door and window rely on open and closed states, motion sensors are only good for motion (right to left, up and down (although hue has temp as well)) presence sensors are still in beta form, not so reliable. not one company makes all of them into one hub either. unless it is cloud based.. so not there is not a all in one of all conditions yet

Hi Brad, great review. You are 100% right with everything. They are awesome blinds and work flawlessly. I have 8 blinds for about 3 moths now! I really do not care that they do not have thread! No need and you are right. I run mine with automations or with Siri commands. These are beautiful blinds and build quality is great. You can't beat the quality for the price and custom choices. I have a scene set up that during the day if I turn my bath fan on the blinds close and when I turn it off they open. I have 6 more blinds I am getting ready to order. I have not charged mine yet but really. 5 hours every 6 moths to charge your batter is no big deal. Homekit shows you the battery level so you can see when they need to be charged.

@@dansonstrom2646 Yeah, but when you factor in the exchange rate, the cost of shipping, and customs tax, it may not be worth the cost and effort--especially if, God forbid, there's something wrong with order and something has to be returned. If I'm going to end up paying all of that, I'm better off getting the Lutron shades, which I can get through retailers here and seem to be the gold standard for smart shades. There's also Ikea, but the limitations on size and colour don't work for the windows I want the shades for.

I noticed the blinds open and close fairly slowly. How does these blinds compare to other blinds in regards to speed in opening and closing? Also, how does the motor noise compare to the Lutron Serena shades?
@TheBradLloyd
@TheBradLloyd 2 жыл бұрын
Speed wide it's maybe slightly slower than Eve, but doesn't personally bother me. I haven't got to try Serena shades but from what I've heard, Lutron would be quieter. Hoping to try them soon!

This sounds MUCH more reasonable than what I've priced out from local custom blind stores. And though I work with SmartThings and Zigbee these days, I'd rather wait until Thread-enabled motors come out (assuming their Zigbee ones can't or won't be upgradable to Threat). The only question I have is about the power of the motors - especially for large (especially wide) windows: I'm looking at a 100% blackout blind for a big, wide (roughly 8' x 5') window. Such blinds can get heavy and I wonder about the durability of the motor for that use case.

What is the benefit of thread vs zigbee?
@PeloquinDavid
@PeloquinDavid Жыл бұрын
@@tomrwills They are pretty closely related, using the same bit of the spectrum to communicate within a smart home environment, but Thread (as the more recent one to emerge) has been designed to be used with "Matter" - which is SUPPOSED to make it easier to reliably control a wide variety of smart devices via a single controller (or multiple controllers if you're set up that way). Matter's growing pains - especially when it comes to integrating WiFi devices that supposedly support Matter - mean that a lot of us (those who have too many WiFi devices and want to upgrade to more fit-for-purpose platforms) are patiently waiting for a lot more Thread-based Matter devices to come onto the market. From what I hear Zigbee devices are more likely to play nice with Matter controllers (especially legacy controllers like Smartthings that have added Matter support), but - thanks to a lack of consistency in how Zigbee devices work - there still remain a lot of Zigbee devices that don't. (I have a fair few of the latter as well as too many Wi-Fi devices, come to think of it...)
