Google maps is good for planning for sure, I also use a truckers GPS , book map (Atlas) and a truckers APP. Google does not state truck routes etc. we have all the tools at are disposal, just need to use them. Awesome videos, thanks for the great info !!

Great explanation of the "triangle". I'm new at this and my mentor has been great at explaining all of this to me. However I'm still a little nervous about going solo and having to figure out how much time I need to give myself. Your explanation was very helpful. Thank you brother trucker and may Yahuah bless you and yours

Greetings Rick. Google maps is fine for 4-wheelers, but is it ideal for trucks? A commercial truck atlas is going to confirm whether Google picked the right roads. Alternatively, does Google maps have a commercial truck option? (There should be a GPS app for commercial trucks.) Google provides useful information (e.g., distance in miles, time) but I agree that writing everything down is preferable, especially with the help of an atlas. Even better if the dispatcher has given you a recommended route. Cheers.

Hi Dan Stafford - what do you do when your GPS is wrong which happens every now and again? Do you use your GPS for route planning - how does that work? All the best, Cheers Rick

What about when your gps freezes and shuts down when yiu are in the city? Or in the middle of nowhere where some of the roads to the customer, do not even show up on the gps?

I am not a truck driver but looking for tutorial videos on how to read atlases. I applied for a driver position and they made us take a little test using the Thomas guide for two adjacent counties, Los Angeles and Orange County . One of the questions were “how would you get from xxxx random street Los Angeles to xxxx random street Anaheim ?” I could not figure out how I was supposed to go about doing that even though I knew enough to find the correct pages each location was on but how to connect the two separate pages. It was a test so obviously I could not ask the test administrator for a mini class but I was completely daunted. Sure, I might be able to figure it out if it was a gigantic map all on ONE page but I know the point was to see if I knew how to put it together visually and mentally in my mind. How would I have done this? It was an atlas of the two combined counties.

And then Google or Internet or WiFi didn't work. Or there was a road close. Long live the atlas. Ralph McNally or Michelin is you best friend. You even get to see poi, gas station, national parks. What a dream! Stop relying on your mobile telephone, navigation or computer. To have a small notepad with alternative routes.

Hi texas trucker80 - Thank you for your comment. And you are most welcome. And that is a good analogy, without the roots (ie, the plan) you're going to get lost and waste time. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick

Google maps is great for getting traffic and mileage information but do not use it as your only source of navigation especially in places like New York City.
