The .50 is a big beast, but Hollywood and the media have given it a bit of an overblown reputation. It'll shred most glass and metal, but it's not magical. A couple feet of hard packed dirt is enough to stop it, and water will turn pretty much any small projectile into a useless lead weight in just a few feet.

I served with the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment in Vietnam in 1969. We had the M2 Browning 50 caliber machine gun (M1919) mounted on all out tanks and armored personnel carriers. It could easily penetrate engine blocks and as we believed anything else we might encounter. A brutal, effective weapon for the last 101years. It was put into service at the end of WWI and is still in use today.

At 5:59 if you go frame by frame, the very first frame where the .50 cal hits the glass, there is a bright flash of light. Do you think that its the tip of the round heating up to crazy temperatures from the energy of impact being converted to heat, or is something else going on there?
@PeregrineBF
@PeregrineBF 6 жыл бұрын
Another possibility is sonoluminescence. If the heat/pressure is enough to make the polycarbonate act like a fluid the bullet might cavitate briefly and cause a flash. Just judging by the color a rough estimate (screenshot + CIE 1964 10 degree colour matching function) of the temperature is around 6750 K. That seems low for sonoluminescence temperatures, so simple heating (or some other explanation) is more likely.
@JRizzo-li2dr
@JRizzo-li2dr 6 жыл бұрын
I like the idea of sonoluminescence. Going back and calculating for KE, assuming he used a 700 grain .50 BMG round (45g at 2978 ft/s), would give the round around 18.54 KJ of energy. Using that number along with the specific heat equation, it could easily get hot enough to melt the glass, copper jacket, or lead. However, on the extremely small timescales I'm not sure if it could overcome the thermal inertia of the materials in order to make them melt. I think we're on the right track, but definitely missing something.

Definitely, Yaw Lo, and latest breaking astrophysical scientific news is that it has made several orbits around the Earth but is running out of momentum and is soon to finally return to Earth, right down the center of that "Deepest-dug-hole/World-Record" pit in Russia and will crack through that last layer that the Russians stopped drilling at and will break that layer (which happens to be the Earth's natural geographic safety seal) and all the hot magma and lava and stuff will come erupting up through that broken seal and up the hole and erupt out to the surface, thereby deflating the whole planet and destroying the Earth and all life aboard it. @SmarterEveryDay... That was cool, thanks for sharing, SmarterEveryDay and Slo Mo Guys. I'm reminded of some old military training films that show how that half-cone phenomena is 'counted on' in naval warfare when an armor-piercing projectile is fired through the armor-plated bulkheads of a target ship... not only does it pierce through the layers and explodes, it also creates those half-cone fragments out of the armor plating which can travel along and break through the layers deeper inside the target ship.

If too much light impinges on a given pixel in some CMOS image sensors, the potential well of that pixel can spill over and increase the reference level (this is called 'blooming' for CCD sensors). This in turn, causes an error in the sensor's output due to the subtraction of signal and reference. Since the subtraction results in a negative value, the output of the sensor is set to zero. Thus the 'black spots' appear in a field of bright pixels.

Hey, Destin, frustum isn't exactly an old word in the sense of being archaic. We use it in computer graphics to describe the volume of space viewed by a virtual camera. A lot of the calculations that your graphics card does relate to stretching that space to be rectilinear and then flattening it into a 2D plane.

Yes frustums are in play but I don't think the clear dot has anything to do with them. Based on what I know about "bullet resistant" "glasses" they aren't actually one solid piece of material but rather a lamination of acrylic and polycarbonate with an optically clear binder. The reason why that little dot is see through is because the impact energy was great enough to completely pulverize the acrylic face leaving nothing but the polycarbonate backing layer. If you shot pure acrylic the plate would completely shatter and the bullet would go through. If you shot pure polycarbonate it would punch a clean hole and the bullet would go straight through. Only when used in conjunction with one another does the plate begin to develop "bullet resistant" properties. The acrylic face plate shatters on impact; this absorbs and deflects kinetic energy and Increases the surface area of the bullet (mushrooming it), essentially spreading the impact force over a greater area. This impact force is then delivered onto the polycarbonate which acts as a "blanket" to capture the bullet and "glass" shrapnel. I can kind of validate my theory with video footage from 2:48. The visible "murkiness" you see is caused by the different materials flexing different amounts and the binding agent letting go. I use the term "murkiness" for lack of a better word; can you see how cloudy it is? Now take note of the stress fractures (cracks) and compare them to the "murkiness"; notice they have nothing to do with one another. The "cracks" extend multiple different directions and in some instances far beyond the "murkiness". These "cracks" you are seeing are caused by the acrylic separating from itself whereas the "murkiness" is caused by the separation of the rigid acrylic, from the the flexible polycarbonate. More specifically its actually the glue loosing its bond and deforming, this causes refractions and makes it loose its optical transparency. Its the difference between "cracking" in the Xy, Xz and Yz axis. (This of course changes based on your point of view and orientation of the plate but if you read to this point I think you get what I'm saying.) How else could I explain it?... Everyone knows what a mach cone looks like right? Well imagine the mach cone is sand (from crushed acrylic); The bullet is going to transmit its energy into the sand surrounding it, dragging it along as it plows its way into the polycarbonate (essentially fluid dynamics). Also remember that the lead bullet is physically deforming, mushrooming; pancaking if you would. All of this. combined with drag is enough to slow it down to a point where the polycarbonate can flex and act as a sort of catchers mitt. It literally bends and warps to contain the remaining energy. Its awesome. Its the difference between 467 joules of being concentrated on a single point at the tip of the bullet versus spread out over say a nickel-quarter sized area (life and death). This stuff is sort of like tank armour except tanks use ceramic and steel which leaves them vulnerable to HESH rounds (High impact squash head) (basically it turns the tanks armour into deadly shrapnel in the form of spall) (not to be confused with spatter). Hopefully some or most of you know what I'm talking about cause I'm getting tired of writing and am way off topic now but it does lead me to ask the question: why are the inside of tanks not lined with Kevlar; or are they?

Nice video! Would have loved to hear more about the fracture cones and how they propagate through the material and what the angle of the cone is for the glass. With the 9mm shot that center point that stayed clear and mostly flawless was a very interesting phenomena. Like the rebound in the middle of a crater impact but untouched. That brings up a question of what kind of elasticity does the material the 'glass' is made of have? Is it several layers of laminated glass together? Some kind of acrylic? I'm hypothesizing that when the 9mm impacted it created a compression perpendicular to the point of impact but did not actually break the glass, however the energy being redirected into the shock of that 'cone' then fractured the glass around it leaving the impact sight untouched. Or the bullet was simply unable to overcome a friction barrier at the surface and when the lead shredded on impact the burred edges dug out the circular crater . OR if it's a laminate material was that impact sight a cleared section of the next layer down? Love your channel man but I'm hungry for more information!
@siggyincr7447
@siggyincr7447 6 жыл бұрын
They said it was a type of acrylic. My thoughts on it are similar to yours. It looked like the 9mm bullet deformed a cone of material in front of it and as it did the surrounding material had nowhere to go but outwards causing pieces to blow off all around it.
