My Mom saw Mr. Kiley on Broadway when "Man Of La Mancha" premiered on Broadway. She brought home the soundtrack album of the show. I learned every song by heart & hoped that one day, I too could see Mr. Kiley perform his role as Don Quixote de La Mancha. Fast forward 15 years later, in my 20s, I did just that. Cathy? I don't know if you've ever heard of the TV space Science Fiction show "The Expanse", (kind of a man's thing) but they named a ship "Rocinante". Don Quixote was referenced several times so I'm guessing that naming the ship that, was further homage to something that is very dear to so many people. The lead character fancied himself a knight when he was a kid, so his mother got him several editions of Don Quixote, even giving him another as an adult. Peace.

Seeing this old video of Kiley singing The Quest (as it was originally titled), and reading all the comments of praise below, makes me doubly aware of how privileged I was to appear with him in the world premier of this landmark musical, at Goodspeed Opera House (East Haddam, CT) in the summer of 1965. I was a teenage apprentice there for 2 summers, and in 1965 Al Selden (who ran Goodspeed, having himself been a Broadway producer and composer) decided to bring Broadway director Albert Marre, his wife Joan Diener and Dick Kiley (all 3 from 1953's hit musical KISMET) to try out their new show called MAN OF LA MANCHA at Goodspeed. It was rather an all-star cast (as you can see from the cast album), and I was awestruck being in their presence. Even more so when I myself got cast as one of only two "Knights of the Mirrors" in the climactic Act II sequence, Don Quichote's breakdown. (Yes, the show had an intermission then. By November, when it got to the Anta Washington Square Theatre in downtown NYC, it was presented in one act.) So there I was, at Goodspeed, me and one other apprentice, both of us short guys, crushing the spirit of 6-foot-plus tall Richard Kiley!! Kind of ridiculous, but the audience was moved by it, anyway. Mr. Marre, the director, vowed to use taller actors if and when the play got to New York!! That happened only 4 months later, when it opened downtown to mixed reviews but rapturous audience response. By then I was off in college. All of us Goodspeed apprentices met together at Thanksgiving break to go see our old pals from the summer premier. And what a sensational production it was! Albert Marre and legendary set designer Howard Bay outdid themselves with their bold staging and design. Richard Kiley rightfully won the 1966 Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical. Even though its initial NYC theater was physically Off-Broadway, it had over 1000 seats and thus qualified for Tony nominations. LA MANCHA played there for its first 2 years before moving uptown to the Martin Beck (now the Hirschfeld), where it ran for many more years. I still can't believe that this was my first professional gig in the theater, and that I am still at it, more or less. Thanks to KZbin, and all of you, for letting me relive such a pleasant memory.

He must have been heartbroken when he didn't get the movie version (which was awful) and I'm shocked the movie version has never been remade with a actors who can BOTH sing and act and it is faithful to the original stage production and orchestrations. The soundtrack to "Man of LaMancha" has been in my "library" since it came out when I was about 5 years old. Mom used to listen to it in her bedroom and I took it from her and put it into mine. From there, it went into the car in 1977, when we were still rockin' the old 8-Tracks. The sound was so good, it was too damn hard to throw either the player OR the tape away, so I installed an under-dash 8-track to compliment the newly acquired AM/FM Cassette deck from K-Mart. I eventually put it on cassette, then CD and now all tracks reside on my computer. This soundtrack will ALWAYS hold a special place in my heart, along with Richard Kiley. I would love to meet his daughter, just to say thank you through her to Mr. Kiley, for nearly 60 years of enjoyment. I'm actually playing it on my computer as I type. It's REALLY special to me now, since mom passed in early April at 89 and dad followed almost an exact month later at 95. These songs will always bring a tear of joy AND "unbearable sorrow". Sorry for that. Peace.

this song comes halfway through the play. This is the moment when the audience (just like Aldonza) stops laughing at this old fool, and begins to hear what his disordered mind believes in.... what he believes is worth devoting one's last ounce of courage to pursue .....despite it not being achievable. Impossible. But to try, to dream.... to reach for....that is where glory lies. So try to forget about how it is sung... pretend youve never heard it before, dont sing along.... dont listen at it....listen to it... hear a crazy old madman standing alone under the stars in the courtyard of a dirty little inn....

I was just thinking that it somehow seems as if the title "Sir" should be before Richard Kiley's name, and probably would be had he been British instead of American. Not that I am a believer in aristocracy; I am very glad the US doesn't have it. But there just was always a certain aura of dignity around Kiley that seemed like a man born to become an aristocrat even if not born AS an aristocrat. He carried himself like one who is confident that he deserves his celebrity, somehow seeming more famous than he really was without seeming self-deluded about it. "Self-appointed knight" is a good description of him, not just of one role he played in a single musical.

The point of the piece when you hear and see what Cervantes was portraying through this character. Kiley just leans on his lance and lets the words come out. No gestures or histrionics. The finale, where the entire cast (minus Cervantes/Quixote & Sancho Panza) reprises this song with some alteration, shows that the prisoners (and ultimately us) get it.

My mother bought this album when I was a wee little feller. I'd sit by the speaker for hours playing over and over until the disc became a cloudy grey from wear. Then she'd buy another one!

I'm currently playing "The Barber" in a theater in Silicon Valley, CA. It's wonderful to be in this production with such memorable characters and stunning music. Richard Kiley is one of the greats and it's wonderful to see this performance.!

This is an outstanding song that I heard several times as a child and at the time had no idea would be living it today. Such an inspiring song, love it and Richard Kiley is the only one do it justice.

This is a timeless anthem about doing your best, trying & striving no matter the odds. Impossible? We do that before breakfast. I saw him do this in a small Chicago theater a long while ago. I hope we can all strive to be the best we can be and do more than we think we can achieve. After all, the world was built by people who didn't stop at improbable or impossible. I've their tracks in the Nebraska prairie.

How interesting. I'm currently in Nebraska desperate to go home to New York. Covid-19 is raging. Broadway is shuttered. The city is on pause. This song is so fitting at this time in our lives. Lord willing, The Show Will Go On. 💞

@@donna6348 Hope you made it home. Omaha's not a bad place if you have guide but Epley isn't the place for that. Lots of arts and artists. I know because I graduated high school with some of them. I understand wanting to get the hell out of some place you're trapped in. The last time I was back, I spent 12 hours and couldn't wait to get out. Lol. Good luck back in the Big Apple.

My all time favorite musical….saw it with Richard Kiley, have the movie with Peter O’Toole and saw it with Raul Julia in Boston at the Colonial Theater. Know every word to every song and to me…we all have an impossible dream!!!

Everybody and their uncle has recorded this gem. The original is best most of the time. Kiley had the best rendition in my opinion.

Had the great fortune of seeing him reprise the role on Broadway in 1977. It was one of three legitimate "show stoppers" I've experienced, where the audience stood and the end of the song, and the show couldn't continue until we were all clapped out. I still get goosebumps watching it.

I sure really truly honestly do love all of the singers who do the version of the impossible dream. All of them do a wonderful job on the song 🎵no matter who they are. I give them all a thumbs 👍.

To think 1966 is the year, I was merely a tadpole, had no wants or needs while this masterpiece was being heard. In later years it was rock that I heard, now in my life I started to listen, this is wisdom, a way to achieve anything you desire, my take is with honor you are a success in life. Retaining your honor when it's changed is the trait of a true Knight, if we had true leaders with Honor the rule of Justice would not fleeting. In the United States (FL) we have a election, 2022 November, vote with your instincts, anyone can say they have honor but few possess it.
