I had a friend who was really good with Link. And from what I observed, he was good because he utilized Link's bombs, boomerangs, and hookshot with incredible efficiency from the center-ish of stages.

Agreed. Link is by far the most fun character. Just constantly throw projectiles until opponents dare to get close. NEVER get your sword stuck in the ground when doing the down-spike. Cancel it out & destroy opponents. Jump backwards while throwing boomerangs where you think your opponent will go & it drives them crazy. The best was when I’d jump away while throwing them upwards & my opponents would jump thinking I’d throw them downwards. We’d call those Predictarangs. DOOMerangs we’re thrown when they’d ricochet all crazy & somehow still hit an opponent seemingly impossibly. Savearangs were when a thrown boomerang would come back to save me from a throw or combo that I’d get stuck in. I’m sure there were more. Brings back good memories.

Jigglypuff is very low because it plays like a hit-and-run character where you have to run away for most of the match. Nothing to do with its similarities to Kirby.

I laughed out loud when you started playing "1 2 Oatmeal". Shoutous to Simpleflips Smash 64 was my childhood. Glad you covered this. As for why the unpopular characters are unpopular, here's what I got: Jiggs is a character designed to slow the game down. People don't like that, and I think that people likely remember Jiggs being a part of some of their less favorite matches. Ness and Yoshi both have a bizarre playstyle, and I think that people who liked playing it found those two to be frustrating and unintuitive. Yoshi, for instance, being screwed if he ended up offstage after burning that double jump and Ness being dead if he misses his up b. No air dodge as a last resort either. DK having no projectiles and an awkward playstyle. Now Samus I don't fully get since she's got a projectile and a tether grab. Samus was perfectly fun to play, maybe there's something I missed.

I love Samus. But I understand why isnt much appreciated. Might be because of her weak attacks like Up Smash, Down Smash, Front Air, Up Air missing final hitbox, Up tilt just sucks, Down tilt as well...

Sad that Sector Z wasn’t included in Ultimate. It’s better to scale than Corneria and it’s in space, it’s way cooler IMO.

the bottom 3 characters are the ones without a good Up-B recovery. Makes sense to me they would be unpopular from a casual perspective. Meanwhile, Kirby at the top has the "best" recovery in the game.

I know it might be a minor nitpick with your survey, but you really should of asked whether the people had unlocked all the characters or not when they played. Just seems like a simple question that would of helped support the data more. Besides that minor nitpick, very well done video. Liked the editing and the work that was put in, plus, I learned a bit about how people view this game. Seems like harder to understand recoveries were the breaking point on the characters. On stages, I'm surprised Peach's Castle actually is liked, even as a kid I though that stage was just shapes with very little Mario flair in them. I guess it is also why I liked Zebes a bit as well, had the Metroid flair to make it feel unique. I find it funny that Charizard and Blastoise's rivalry can't be left alone even in smash lol. Fantastic job and keep up the good work.

They really did Samus dirty on this one, this was the closest we got to Metroid on the N64 and i always admire the stages and character model because of what it could've been. Also at 16:00 there's one frame were the background becomes black, it scared me a little because Porygon lol

I think the Metroid stage got done dirty simply because there HAD to be a least favorite stage and all the 64 stages are good, except for Yoshi's story which no one picked for some reason. Like, the cloud on the right side didn't earn it last place? Brinstar isn't even that bad a stage, its gimmick makes it much more interesting than Yoshi's story which is just a plain setup with a gimmick that ruins every match depending on character choices. I think Samus herself placed low because I bet there are some salty players who think she is campy because of her Charge beam attack, when it's really not that bad in this game.

Kirby's always been my main, with others being added in later games. As for least fave, that would be Jigglypuff. I know she has skills that make her "not a Kirby", but none of those ever gelled with me. For stages, my pick is Hyrule Castle, and I really don't like Peach's Castle. I even know exactly what the problem is: those angled platforms. They, without fail, always save COMs from what really should be their deaths. And I'm not going to discuss items, too many to judge for me.

Captain Falcon's gonna take you to Flavortown Me and my friends used to play on 2.0 damage ratio with Bob-ombs, Bumpers, and a ton of stocks. Of all the videos in the survey series, this is the one that makes me wonder how sampling bias affected the results. Your subscribers and followers probably have a base level of N64 Savvyness, but arent necessarily in the competitive Smash 64 scene, which probably gives it bias towards nostalgia... but thats also probably true of most people who still care about smash 64 😅. Theres more questions about it too like competitive vs casual that the other surveys dont necessarily have. Overall, a very interesting watch

After Ultimate, I kinda feel Smash 64 is the likeliest of the older Smash games I'd revisit, I don't think it's the best or anything but it just gives me feel nostalgia in the best way possible and I find its simplicity charming in a way. I actually really like all the stages in the game! A rarity as every game onwards will at least have a few set of them I absolutely can't stand (although I can't 100% confirm that in Ultimate as I didn't bother buying every DLC), but I feel all of 64 options are really fun, casually speaking that is. Items are pretty good too, but I'm glad the red shell was yeeted out from I think Brawl onwards? never liked the way it tracked you on ground for a few solid seconds.

I always like the red shell for that reason, much like snorlax, it changed the way you played for a bit as you had to reposition and try to get the other players to get hit by it. The only issues with it are how long it lasts and that it tends to target the player who threw it more often than not. I hope it comes back but instead of tracking it simply didn't slide off ledges but bounced off them, so if you threw it onto a small platform, it would bounce back and forth repeatedly.

I imagine this rank thing is likely just gonna be limited to N64 games… Which is a good move don't get me wrong, it seems to be in that line of players who had many a way to experience these games, both back then and now… Personally, pretty much every N64 game that was on the Wii Virtual Console, I experienced it there first. Though it kinda makes me wonder if there are plans to expand the scope beyond the N64 library, both before and after… and potentially how much longer and extensive a ranking for SSBU would be, between the game's 89 characters (103 counting alts like Alph), 115 stages, (116 counting Training), 87 items, 55 Pokémon, and 59 assist trophy characters

I think the reason why Yoshi is low is because he didn't have an Up B who could help him to get further (same rhing for Jigglypuff) and Ness maybe because his Up B is hard to control... these are just my opinions
