I'm telling you, hearing the Avatar saying "Checkmate!" again feels great! Also, I think if you're winning against Lucina with him/her, (s)he will say something special. There also seem to be other context sensitive victory poses, like Lucina's victory over Marth or Ike.

Yes she did. In Fire Emblem: Awakening, Robin is the game's only playable Tactician, not counting children characters. Checkmate is definitely a very common thing for characters to say to emphasize their strategic characterization~

And the difference would be? You'd still have a clone. Alph uses Pikmin, and a rocket, like Olimar, but Dark Pit doesn't use the Three Sacred Treasures.

Dr. Mario, Lucina, and Dark Pit WERE supposed to be swaps for Mario, Marth, and Pit. Separating them provided some unique abilities: Dr. Mario's pills and strength over speed, Lucina's balanced sword damage, and Dark Pit's Side B having electric properties. As of Super Mario Odyssey, Dr. Mario DID become an extra costume for Mario.
