This is how you play Samus. Most people I see play her so defensively that they just get juggled. Samus is a pressure character. You have to be aggressive and strip options from your foe, you can't let them run a the stage.

that's easier to do when your opponent's primary playstyle is inherently defensive. I think that's why esam believes samus to be a good pick into snake. probably because other matchups force samus into a defensive position and rob her of her strength.

This is how you play Samus in THIS MU. She can kind of go offensive against snake because she has better frame data up close, snake doesn't have a good burst/OoS options, and the fact that she doesn't mind being at grenade range make this imo a counter pick. He was going Pikachu all night except vs MVD

I'm not saying that its an auto loss situation, I'm just saying that most of samus's tools aren't available when she's getting rushed down. Ultimate is pretty balanced, and at a casual level you can make all the characters work, but I doubt you'll be seeing much samus deep into tournaments except as a counter pick now that esam has demonstrated how unlocked samus is against snake.

bonzwah1 I agree. She feels a bit too stiff and slow as she is right now. But Samus never felt like herself from metroid. Fox is an especially bad matchup but I disagree on pichu. Pikachu I'd agree with, but Samus has some safe reach on Pichu. Not saying she's favored, just that it's not as dire as you make it out to be. I'd like to see some changes to her like the fans did in Project M. To this date that is the most fun Samus I've played in smash. Some buffs I'd like is for her to have more trump skills, her bombs to explode like they did in Melee, make her quicker both air speed and ground speed, allow her to shoot missiles faster and have more out.

the sound in smash is messed up by default. For some reason nintendo made all the sound backwards (guess they forgot). It's not well known, but if you put your headset on backwards your sound is backwards too, fixing the game's sound and increasing your reaction time.

Damn this game is so much better for spectators than smash 4. I remember as a very casual viewer for smash 4 tournies I'd go into twitch vods to watch a recent grand finals and have to spend so much time skipping to find moments where things were happening or any actual suspense. I click on this video, skip to get to the match and accidentally go a little bit past the start; BOOM both players have 60% on them! Sick.

I hate to comment on the fact that there is a female commentator but I just wanna say I really like her. Sometimes it feels like it’s just for inclusion and we’ll get stuck with someone not too great at commentating but she’s great! Edit: after reading the intense replies I’ve gotten on this comment I now see that I could have worded better, I’m not going to change it so people can read what I said and be able to make their own decisions on whether what I said was incorrect or not. I just want to say I’m nothing but happy to see more inclusion and commentators that DESERVE to be doing it along top level play. kevin cubes Pikachu is a good character. Just not as good as people thought he would be. Pikachu is easily walled by Marth, Lucina, Ness, and Wolf (IMO). Also Mario and Dr.Mario can deny Pikachu’s neutral like in smash 4. However Pikachu does great against fighters that can’t handle pressure, have weak OoS options, have a hard time chasing him (thx to quick attack), and/or have a bad offstage game. Ryu, Ken, Captain Falcon, Megaman are good examples and I believe they are high and mid tier fighters.

Tim Hiltz you r right about Pikachu not being a good zoner against g&w. Pikachu can be aggressive to him but it depends if he can get in. Chef is very spammable against Pikachu’s quick attack. He also has disjointed hitboxes in some of his moves to space Pikachu. Esam at one point said he counters Pikachu in smash 4 and in ultimate G&W got stronger like all the fighters (except bowser jr, Bayonetta, and Cloud (Bayonetta and Cloud are still strong)). Meta needs to develop to see how the MU goes.

At 2:10 the most optimal thing for samus to do when snake is charging his up smash is just take ledge and grab him, its not a difficult read because almost all snakes leave a grenade at ledge and charge up smash by habit. Its just being aware of when the grenade goes off, you can grab them out of the up smash and follow with a back throw into anything you want that kills snake

Dark Samus is supposed to be very, very slightly better - slightly faster roll, up-smash has a slightly better hitbox, projectiles fly a few pixels lower - but the difference is so minimal that it really doesn't matter.

Damn I’ve never seen Esam play Samus. Not as as good as his pikachu but still good. I appreciate his to the point play style. You do t need tons of projectiles to put out good pressure, you just need to play outside the box. 90% of Samus mains are just polished spammers/campers. Esam needs a little more Sauce on his Samus to get her iki. Good shit.
