Sylheti is an eastern Indo-Aryan language spoken mainly in the Sylhet ( ꠍꠤꠟꠐ ) region of Bangladesh, and the neighbouring Barak Valley in the Indian state of Assam. There are also speakers of Sylheti in the Indian states of Meghalaya, Tripura and Manipur, as well as in the USA and UK. The traditional story of the origin of the Syloti-Nagri alphabet is that it was developed around the beginning of the 14th century by Saint Shahjalal and his 360 saintly companions, most of whom were Arabic speakers. Other scripts used at the time were deemed unsuitable for the Sylheti language. In the 1860s, a Sylheti by the name of Moulvi Abdul Karim spent several years in Europe and learnt the printing trade. After returning home, he designed a woodblock type for the Syloti-Nagri alphabet and founded the Islamia Press in Sylhet Town in about 1870. Other Sylheti presses were established in Sunamgonj, Shillong and Calcutta. These presses fell out of use during the early 1970s. Since then the Syloti-Nagri alphabet has been used mainly by linguists and academics.

As a Dhakaya, I thought Sylheti would be a completely different language but I understood like 80% of what was being said here.
@NisCho7544 жыл бұрын
SportsFanatic314 It is actually a separate language from Bangla tho Bangladesh hasn’t recognised it yet as an independent language, hence we just say we speak in Sylheti Bangla. Anyway glad you understood since most non-Sylheti usually don’t understand
@Tah_20234 жыл бұрын
@@NisCho754 many Sylhetis themselves debate whether it's a separate language or just a dialect of Bangla. Whatever the case may be, to me it sounds like Bangla but spoken much faster and with some different pronounciations .
@NisCho7544 жыл бұрын
@@Tah_2023 to be honest that's sylhetis who don't know the background of their own language, heritage or culture. Just the lack of knowledge. But unfortunately some of them are usually even ashamed to speak sylheti, they go as far as teaching their kids to speak shuddho bangla (or what ever one wants to call it) at home among fellow sylheti family memebers (they've got some stupid mentality, they need to look and sound good infront of people from other districts). Fairly speaking I wouldn't even call them sylhetis, rather wanna-be-non-sylhetis. Everyone should be proud of their language or dialect, without feeling the need to please others. Identity crisis, that's what it is.
@Tah_20234 жыл бұрын
@@NisCho754 I'm not going to comment on what language Sylhetis in the West teach their kids and whatnot because that's an internal matter in their community. What I will say is that it's important to know both Bangla and the local bhasha if they're living in Bangladesh (whether you're from Sylhet, Chittagong, etc). In Bangladesh, people from cities like Sylhet and Chittagong are bilingual to a degree as they've retained their local bhasha and speak Bengali too. If they didn't want to learn shuddho Bengali, then it would be very difficult to communicate with people from outside of their cities. As I live in the West, the language issue doesn't matter to me because I usually speak to Dhakayas and non-Dhakayas alike in English.
@NisCho7544 жыл бұрын
@@Tah_2023 in school, uni, work place etc in Bangladesh standard bangla is used but what I'm talking about is inside the home, those of us born and raised abroad do speak sylheti with our family members except few who have been taught to speak standard bangla (as I said:just to fit in).
