First let me say that i went to both Schools. Edna Karr (Junior High)79-81 (Oliver Perry Walker) High School. 82-84 Year i graduated! We are talking many many years ago!! Lb Landry was Our"rival"! Very Very bad School! We had Security guards on the property at Walker because Landry would come to the School to start trouble!! Walker could NOT be beat by any surrounding School that we played in football with Our BAND!! Simply put they were #1 There is no bias here because i went to both Schools and was in the #1 Choir in the State at Edna Karr! I see that walker and landry merged as 1 school now,however having watched this video ,Edna Karr blew them out of the water!!! Their sound is impressive and on point!!

What we had here was a Battle of the Embouchures........he who blew theirs out first....lost! If an entire Band cannot play loud without sounding strong, should back down on the volume. Each Band had a few 'screamers' in each section that played at a level that caused them to sound sloppy. They could hit a note loud but, not hold it through. You could tell LW's Sousaphones were getting very tired and they were just forcing air through their instruments towards the end. Karr had a little left in the tank that helped them in the closing minutes HOWEVER, just because you can sound loud, it means nothing if that's all it is....LOUD.....there has to be music, meaning EVERY section has to be heard, those notes written for EVERY instrument weren't put on paper as optional. I couldn't hear the melody from any one of them. There are 1st....2nd and 3rd Trumpets, with each playing a DIFFERENT note even though they play them simultaneously. Same goes for Woodwinds....that had NO bloody chance in this type of battle. Hell, you can barely hear the Percussion Sections of either Band, and a Marching Band Marches to the beat of the Percussion Section. It's like, whoever's Sousaphones sounded the loudest....they won....which ended up being Karr due to LW's sounding exhausted towards the end. Do Band Directors even teach using the Diaphragm anymore to get power, rather than just coming from the lungs and through the mouth? You can tell who's doing which by watching their cheeks. If their cheeks are stretched and full of air, they aren't using their Diaphragms correctly (that isn't always the case, as their are famous Brass players who had the fat cheeks but, those are in smaller numbers...by far). You can clearly hear that, the more tired your cheeks become, the sloppier your playing sounds. Each Director needs to start sitting their Bands down in their Band Rooms, and work on gaining POWER, vs just playing LOUD. A small Band of 50 Instruments, that plays with proper technique and plays with POWER will outplay both of these Bands. If these kids have aspirations of playing in any number of College Bands.....they had better learn whilst in HS.....some College Marching Bands have killer tryouts that a hopeful must get through just to get a spot in the Band (not even talking about the competition within to see who sits in what Chair....best--good). There are many in most Bands that don't get to perform with the Marching Band (for instance), and only get to practice (like sitting the Bench on a Team). PLEASE learn to play the Instrument, and NOT let it play you!! Sorry for the length of the Comment. I have to admit that I STILL have urges to play in a great Marching Band....I was a Drum Major, then Head Drum Major my Sr year in HS, then 2 years in the College Marching Band. Those were some of the best 8 years of my life....may as well count Junior HS, where we learned for those 2 years, how to become Musicians and to just bloody march in step! Other than sounding like shite, my other pet peeve is marching OUT of step lmao. All that marching for all those years helped me a LOT, when I joined the Military lol.

Learning to use the diaphragm is very important in playing strong...and loud. Learning the correct way when just getting started will only help them once they are in HS and College Bands. A person can blow so hard that they sound....I hate to say it....bad, as in not good. Blaring is not the same as strong, and that should be the 1st thing a Band Director should be teaching the ones just getting started, to the '[vets' who have been playing for a long while.
