I came up to NYU in 1995 and had no idea of the existence of a wooden escalator, but over the next several years I always enjoyed riding them, and I never took the elevator at Macy's. The sound of the escalator in this clip is exactly as I remembered it, and I hope Macy's never gets rid of this.

I think Macy's deserves a lot of credit for keeping these lovely old escalators (the video here is good but really can't do them justice). It is a trip down memory lane! Also, this is the Macy's where Natalie Wood's character worked in the 1961 movie, Love With The Proper Stranger, with Steve McQueen.

I would not call it a relic. I would call it it a masterpiece of quality built when people really cared about craftsmanship and proud to stand behind their work. People really use to care. God bless them

And this was where my fear of escalators all began... not so much the going up ones, as were the going down ones!!!! 40 something years later, and my nightmares still consist of me going down this escalator... Of course I understand the historic meaning of the escalator and am glad and amazed it still exists, but that doesn't change the fact that it scared me for life. I kinda got over it when fate made me work for Macy's, at a mall that didn't have the wooden ones of course... It has always been a love-hate relationship!

The macy*s Herald Square store in Midtown Manhattan actually has 11 retail floors if you include the Basement (Formerly..."the cellar.")...Broadway Building Mezzanine...and the Seventh Avenue Buildings 1...1/2 Floor which is attached to the Mezzanine/Balcony Level. macy*s Herald Square is by far the best department store in Manhattan. However....I like many don't like what they did to the Main Floor and Mezzanine....they should have left the tan colored marble/brass on the pillars as well as those beautiful chandeliers in the Main Broadway Isle. I only hope and pray that TIFFANY & CO. dosen't louse up their Main Floor with their 727 Fifth Avenue Buildings...because of that beautiful 1961 Movie starring Audrey Hepburn...the main floor has to stay "sacrosanct ". I don't really mind what they do to the other floors...as long as it's in good taste...and keeps its "Simple Elegance. "

If a fire breaks out in a wooden escalator, the consequences may be disastrous. The side panels will box the fire in and the heat will be concentrated between the side panels. The heat and gases will follow the escalator steps upwards and heat up the steps until the temperature reaches the flashpoint of the wooden steps and they ignite. This phenomenon is called the trench effect, and was totally unknown before the King’s Cross fire in 1987. The flames will start to follow the steps upwards. All the heat concentrated between the sidewalls in the escalator will go upwards and heat up all the steps above at the same time. This is what happened at King’s Cross. The wooden steps above the fire’s origin were heated up by the extreme heat and gases following the steps between the sidewalls. The wooden steps ignited simultaneously, and caused the huge fireball into the ticket hall.

Sadly, as your video shows, most of the elevators have had their parts replaced with modern ones and only kept the walls -- except for those few elusive ones at the 8th/9th floors. I'd rather see them left as stairs, myself, than replacing the parts. :(
