With text animators you don't really need masks, but you can add them manually

For some reason it works the exact opposite for me. When I drag the track/matte to the shape layer the text dissapears but I can see the mask :( Solved: Nevermind. I wasn't using a filled shape :))) Make sure you all do

Drag the text layer track matte onto the shape layer, not other way around
