I own pair of Baofeng UV-5G GMRS radios which I bought 3 years 2 months ago when I got my GMRS license. Using the stock short antenna I'm able to hit a repeater which is around 18 miles away from where I live. There is only two GMRS repeaters within 20 miles of where I live which is not that active. There is another GMRS repeater that's like 35 miles away that is part of the GMRS net that happens. But I can't hit that repeater least with the radio and antenna I currently have.

Where can I get one of those ground planes for testing the HT's SWR?
@temporarilyoffline9 ай бұрын
I was unable to find the ground plane model, but you can replicate the experience by making a "Tiger Tail" - The length will vary depending on the band of the radio, about 19.5" on 2m, 11.5" for 220 and 6.5" for 440. Just make sure that you always use the same tiger tail when testing all the antennas to not skew your results.

@@temporarilyoffline Thanks, man.
@OhYeah-qx9qn9 ай бұрын
Maybe you got radios that had been returned so weren't really new. Also, do you really need the ground plane for testing HT antenna SWR? Would be interesting if the SWR got worse or better without a ground plane. Thanks for the review!
@temporarilyoffline9 ай бұрын
Splitting hairs as hams do... I believe that when you move the antenna from the body of the radio where "your hand" is the counter poise that you need to account for that with a ground plane. Is the included metal sheet good enough? dunno but its consistent across the testing and that is also an important thing. Going forward I'll be using a "Tiger Tail" for testing because I can't find the metal sheet model anymore.
@OhYeah-qx9qn9 ай бұрын
@@temporarilyoffline Thanks for your quick reply! 😊 When I test SWR on an HT, I've always checked the reading while touching the base of the antenna, but I was just assuming that doing so would compensate for the meter stuck in between. But like you said, consistency is probably the most important part 👍

So you are saying the Nagoya 771 would be the best choice for this radio vs the short antenna that came in the box?
@temporarilyoffline9 ай бұрын
The radio came with 2 antennas, (neither were nagoyas) - the longer antenna was a better match. I will do a video on some GMRS antennas for HTs in the future and find the best one then.

I would say the quansheng uv-k5 with all the mods and hacks recently available is a good candidate. outside of the "send photos" part which ain't easy to achieve using narrowband fm data rate limitations, the other stuff is mostly there (well u'll have to try few different mods to see which one does what)

nice UV-5G + model. them stock short antenna from Baofeng make a better coffee stir stick . video on you tube. I have a 2 pack of the UV-5G models. not the +. same as UV 5R but GMRS and the antenna on radio is SMA F , only UV 5 type that way so far. funny one locked and one not. may have to unlock threw CHIRP . may be dirty on 2 meters. they sold GMRS. my UV-5G (X) is dirty on 2 meters. so I just use them GMRS. I set wide band RX and TX for GMRS. I would put a single stick for antenna on them. better SWR . or the Nagoya 771 ones. if you find a high enough spot you hit that GMRS repeater. I got a 42 in Abbree antenna that may work. hard to walk and use them . 73's
