The thing is that the songs are actual BANGERS with some unexpected chord changes and delicate production. He takes the music far more seriously than himself, and that's the key to what he does. He's got it.

A music reviewer I enjoy made a comment on musical comedians that I want to share. "The only thing I can think of harder than being a comedian is being a musical comedian. Now you gotta be good at two things. No. Now you have to be great at two extremely difficult things. You have to perfect your craft as a songwriter and at the same time, write decent jokes. And a song is meant to be re-listened to so your jokes still have to be funny several plays later. It's actually kinda worst of both worlds scenario, cuz you're still competing with every other KZbin parodist trying to go viral, not to mention every other outlet for comedy that exists, but, at the same time, there's no path to stardom. There's no mainstream market for comedy music like there is for standup. You're lucky to get one song that people like and you'll be included in some Dr. Demento compilations, at best. So, anyone who has made an actual name for themselves as a musical comedian, you can rest assured that they are one of the most talented people you will ever meet." - Todd in the Shadows

He's not wrong. I mean, how many widely recognized musical comedians can you think of? Everyone knows Weird Al, and there are a couple other fairly big names such as Bo Burnham and Stephen Lynch, but they're an extremely rare and talented breed. I don't think Tom Cardy's gotten to their level of recognition yet, but he definitely seems to be on his way, and I look forward to seeing him continue to evolve.

Funny enough I only ever found his stuff from youtube, and it first started with the animated video of Mixed Messages. The I watched more and now have it on my phone to listen to on my way to work. The Big Breakfast has become a joke in my house because when ever I see my parents and they ask me what I'd like for breakfast on holiday I'd play the song, it's to the point now I don't even need to play it we just turn to eachother and say "Big Breakfast!"

From the UK, absolutely love this guy. My wife said one day "listen to this song about anxiety" and I was absolutely hooked, spent a week playing his albums non-stop, now we have a playlist for the car and mention his songs in everyday life (like going shopping together and mouthing "hey! I don't work here!" as we go around the aisle). They're niche and very specific lyrics, and the music is absolutely banging. I love it and hope he's well and having fun.

Look, I'm not comparing him to Tenacious D or anything, but remember when those guys came out? They were huge, and some in the media just didn't get it, because usually the comedy is at the front, or the music is at the front, but not both (with the rare exception of Weird Al, but he is also parody, not strictly original content). Anyway, some people said, "Hey but these Tenacious D songs are actually GOOD. Why don't you guys make a REAL album and quit joking around?" And Jack Black was like, why? Everyone else plays "real" music. We're having fun. And now just look at the internet! I love the fact that musicians with serious chops are able to just goof around, and make a little coin, and we get to watch it. it's great!!!
