As someone who did some took broadcasting classes, and as someone who has been a motorsport fan their entire life, I find these satellite feeds so damn cool and interesting. The constant conversations between pit road, the booth, radio, producers is just fascinating. Just an incredible race and broadcast to go back through.

Jeff Gordon's move on Rusty Wallace is, in my opinion, one of the greatest passes I've ever seen - and certainly one of the ballsiest.

I was watching every race in the schedule from 89 onward. I stopped in 94 so I could review of the entire history of Nascar on You Tube that I could find out here. So, I wouldn't be watching anything from 99 for a long while yet. However, since I'm trying to avoid this year we are in now, in particular, I won't mind going back to 99 for a day, because it was a whole heck of a lot betterer way back then there yonder.. . Thanx for posting.

I agree it was. America was still America and no social media or political correctness. If you can go back to 99 I was thinking we could try and stop the Columbine disaster from happening because that sparked the Gun Control stuff and everything changed

The height of NASCAR popularity, everyone wanted to be at the races. Favre, Reggie, a Supreme Court Justice. The pit reporters kept saying they couldn't move anywhere because of the amount of people in the pits.

The early to mid 2000s were the peak. The 2006 Daytona 500 was the most watched NASCAR race ever (full flag to flag live coverage at least) with 19.4 million viewers watching (11.3 rating/23 share). The 1999 Daytona 500 brought in 12.9 million viewers (9.5 rating/25 share).

If Mike Skinner had been a better Cup driver, say like if Jeff Gordon or a younger Dale Earnhardt had been in that 31 car, it woulda smoked the field. Larry Mac was pretty damn good at setting up racecars for Daytona & Talladega, Skinner just didn't know how or where to put the damn thing to ever win a race. He was close a few times but could never close the deal. In this race in particular, as good as his car was, he & Dale didn't work together worth a damn, both RCR cars were decent but Skinner's car was clearly better, had they worked together one of them woulda won this. Instead, they let Jeff Gordon drive up there by himself and bulldoze his way into the lead with some help from the 3 car which should have helped Skinner but for whatever reason I still to this day do not know why Dale decided to go with Jeff there at the end. Did he think he would be more able to get by the 24 than the 31 & even if you don't think you can get by don't help that motherfucker Gordon into the lead, this is the same son of a bitch who the year prior won 13 races including last summer's 400 miler at this track, he is THE LAST sumbitch you want out front with a few laps left....
@TheBeigeBox4 жыл бұрын
It’s the same reason Tony Stewart never drafted with Bobby Labonte and instead opted for Dale Jr, has to do with style of driving and skill. If you’re aggressive you’ll run well with aggressive but if you try it with someone inexperienced like Skinner it’d be a wreck. Dale and Jeff created some of the most exhilarating racing in nascar history which is why the racing tapered off after Dales death. Why wouldn’t he want to create a giant story like that; Battling with the next generations great for the lead in the greatest motor sporting event in America? But I do feel your frustration

This race just makes me more pissed at the lack of safety rules back then. The 10 car(Rudd) should never have been allowed to get back on track, he couldn't run 100mph in that heap and the fact he left pit road with the entire pack of cars coming was just so unsafe. I was at this race and it was f'ing cold ! We were just as they come off turn 2 and the wind and air generated from the cars made the temperature feel much lower. We didn't expect that temperature and was almost miserable all race......but.....I'm a huge Rusty Wallace fan and I was loving this race and I really thought he would finally win it. He had the fastest car by far but they made a big mistake by not pitting and I was so pissed at them for staying out. When Rudd was exiting pit and Gordon went to the apron to pass Rusty he should have stayed and forced Gordon to lift but he done the smart thing and moved up...that is when he got caught in the middle. He was still strong enough to stay up by himself but when Skinner got up there and bumped into the side of him .....I would put a paycheck on Rusty lifted and said "F this". I say that cause Rusty has never liked plate racing and the fact he had been on his roof four different times with the last one being really bad. But, I still say the deciding factor was the 2 and 12 not pitting...I really didn't understand that and frankly still don't...lol

Quite frankly, this is the best and my personal favorite Daytona 500. I’m a Jeff Gordon fan, so I was happy to see him win another one. But I agree with everything that you said, Rusty could’ve easily pitted with Gordon and Earnhardt and he would’ve had a better chance at winning. But the whole race was filled with great driving, especially the last 22 laps.

WAY too many hobbled cars puttering around on the apron throughout the whole race. It’s surprising that never led to a tragic calamity.
