This is an old meoldy that goes by a different name, which was a popular retreat (3/4 march) in the old piping days forty-fifity yrs ago.

I'm a scottish american. My clan was scattered to the four winds in the clearances. Few I think know of the clearances of Scotland. The English don't like their sins to be exposed. May god bless those who suffered in the clearances. The history is starting to get out. Thank you Ms. St. Clair for singing this song.

Yes, it's true, Robert, that 'we' English did some terrible things in the past and that we must never forget and learn by our past misdeeds. Then again. aren't most nations guilty of that in past times ? USA and the native Americans, the Balkan Wars etc.etc. let alone the modern conflicts. Usually it's the ruling classes who run and cause the wars and the common people who suffer. My DNA tells me that I'm 20% Celtic and I live in South East England..Quite a ramble, but I suppose I'm fed up with folks saying that the English are so responsible for the wrongs of the world.

Interesting.... Name ONE Englishman who cleared the Scottish tenants from his lands and packed them off to America. Just one.... Any one.... Done by Scots to Scots for Scots. Thank you

The clearances were carried out by Highland land owners, many of them Scottish and the people only survived on marginal landing and were subject to famine

What a spine tingling song..I say this about all of Isla's music. ..such a remarkable clear voice..Melty melty and snuggly comfy...I'm all goose pimples now!!

@covermethis1 Clearances started in 1762 - there was a lull in the early 1800's when the landowners needed men to work the kelp - then more from 1810-1850 - @ time of the famine .

In England, the enclosures took traditional village common land, land where small crofters had grazed their single cow, maybe a couple of sheep and give it to the already wealthy estate owners in the name of progress. For many that was the difference between reasonable comfort and starvation. This is what happens when the government takes the side of the rich and forgets the rights of the poor.

Some of those people who benefited from the great Thatcher sell-off of public housing stock (continued by Blair etc. to this day) may disagree, but this policy has represented a contuation of the eviction, exclusion and impoverishment or the Clearances (and the Enclosures).

Without the clearences, Canada would never have become the country she is today. The displaced scots built the land we know today with no lairds to spoil things. Here the highlanders, lowlanders and many refugees and displaced peoples since have found true freedom. I heard this tune on the pipes many times when I was growing up and it still never fails to stirr me.

Unfortunately (11 years on), what Canada has since become is a repulsive shadow if its former image, largely peopled by the selfish, feeble-minded and oblivious and governed by thugs and dilettantes. Trudeau the elder, imperfect thoughhe was, would be turning in his resting place at the degradation at the soul of this country (and more so, that to the south) and would certainly disown his progeny, popularly known as turdeau, were he to visit today.

What a BRILLIANT arrangement of this song. Not heard of Isla for ages. Forgot too what a great voice she has. I thought title was a bit off. Is it not called 'TIME TO BE SLEEPING' ?

As always, a beautiful voice. Yawn to the comments below. Almost every American or Canadian claims to be Scottish. The clearances were carried out by rich Scottish landowners, not the English. The clearances are also very well known about as they were part of the cirriculum when I was at school. As with most history, the English get the blame for almost everything. I am sick of people pointing the finger at us when nobody alive today can be responsible for the past or what a few elite did. We are sick of having to feel shame when most of our ancestors were working the land and no better off than slaves.

Neither braveheart or Rob Roy were about the clearance. My clan was cleared by the english army, who established their base at Inverness, and then started picking off clans one at a time, mainly those who remained catholic after it was outlawed by Elizabeth. I know the history of the clearances and my Clan better than most on this planet.

Elizabeth died in 1603, Culloden 1746. I think the world leading authority on the clearances should stick to area 51 conspiracies
