Forget about the creepy smiling curse people, miss girl had a horrible circle of unsupportive, terrible people who would sooner treat her like she's genuinely insane than try to actually listen and help her. I left the theater dragging my jaw in the floor after seeing the ending of this movie, I swear, it left me traumatized (ironically). I think it graphed so well the idea of mental illness and trauma. Also, the way she kind of explain the obvious through the scenes were not as unnecessary to me because the whole movie I was asking myself "is it a real monster/spirit or is it a metaphor of trauma?" and i was kind of questioning it with the protagonist all along, and when I realized it was both a monster and a metaphor I was so shocked. It enters my top ten favorite horror movies 🍿

Yeah. I also did not understand her complaining about that strategy of revealing everything slowely because you truely never knew what was really going on in this movie. They didnt knew anything about her hallucinations and if they truly are that dangerous. Clearly in the end of the film we all saw how real everything was and what we are dealing with. The movie went the way with the audience trying to solve the mysteries of the plot with the actual actors together and so the plot did not bombard you with new information in every scene. Completely realistic too if you think of a doctor having brutal hallucinations at some point that only she can see with basically no knowledge that needs to understand how to solve this problem.
@SeagullTheStealer6 сағат бұрын
Well, it’s both. Whenever you see a horror movie where trauma manifests into something evil, the filmmakers are tapping into something cultures have recognized for millennia-or simply drawing on their knowledge of the occult, as many filmmakers do. The "monster"-more accurately a demonic entity, an immaterial being operating in the Aether-is real, and the trauma is real too. Trauma acts as a beacon that attracts these entities, and together, they feed off each other. Ancient cultures understood this connection deeply. For instance, the ancient Hebrews developed specific prayers and rituals to heal spiritual wounds caused by trauma. Some sects, like the Essenes, were so strict about managing these spiritual and mental states that they imposed quarantine procedures for individuals experiencing what we might now call depression, anxiety, or extreme anger. These mental states, they believed, were not only dangerous but literally contagious. The Dead Sea Scrolls, particularly the Community Rule scroll, describe this phenomenon using the term ruach tumah-spirits of impurity that could spread from person to person, akin to a spiritual infection. Other traditions shared similar beliefs. Byzantine records reference comparable practices, and early Christian monasteries warned of the "noonday demon," a force they believed could spread melancholy through entire monastic communities. Modern psychology echoes some of these ideas, albeit stripped of their supernatural framing, through concepts like social contagion-the spread of emotions or mental states through groups. Studies have shown that spending prolonged time with people in negative mental states, such as severe depression or paranoia, can influence others’ mental health. In fact, there is some evidence in psychological research suggesting that symptoms of conditions like schizophrenia, particularly paranoia or delusions, can seem to “ripple outward” in close social circles. This is referred to in psychology as "folie à deux" or shared psychotic disorder, where one individual essentially absorbs another's delusions. This is why it’s so important to avoid negative or deeply distressed individuals when possible. It’s not just emotionally draining-you may, in a very real way, find yourself “carrying” their state after enough time together. You’ve probably felt this before: you spend time with someone in a bad mood, and afterward, you feel down or irritable yourself. This principle extends to other forms of “negative energy,” such as certain types of media or music. Some argue that music itself can carry a kind of energy or “charge” depending on its tone, lyrics, and even the intention behind it. This idea isn’t mere superstition. Music is known to influence mood and behavior -studies show that aggressive or melancholic music can enhance feelings of anger or sadness in listeners. Similarly, music with dark, chaotic, or discordant elements is known to provoke anxiety or unease. I mean, hello; horror movies? Some people (like me lol) go even further, suggesting that certain music and movies are “demonically charged” because of the intentions of its creators. While this is yet to be proven scientifically, the idea makes sense in a cultural context. Throughout history, many occult traditions have believed that sound and vibration can open channels to other dimensions or spiritual realms. For example, the ancient Sumerians believed certain musical notes could summon or banish spirits. Fast-forward to modern times, and you find reports of certain artists explicitly incorporating occult symbols, rituals, or themes into their music. Whether or not this has a supernatural effect, it certainly influences the listener psychologically. To avoid absorbing such negative influences-whether from people, media, or music-I would suggest for everyone to curate their environment with intention. Spend time with people who uplift and inspire you. Choose music that energizes or soothes rather than agitates. And if you ever feel a particular song or person or movie is leaving you drained, it’s okay to step back. Your mental and emotional well-being is worth protecting. Sorry for the novel and hope you're feeling better.

As someone whose been through child hood trauma, this film makes so much sense to me. Trauma is always there, and it follows you. You mask it with a smile, and people around you might not see the the monster (trauma/ trauma responses) that you do

The lines “Your mind makes it real” and “Your mind is so inviting” is really thought provoking and eye opening to me. As someone with a few mental illnesses and who has experienced trauma since childhood. Your mind can truly make something real once you think something over and over and have it as your reality, it’s hard to change it and unlearn it. Like if you grew up being shut down and bullied by your parents and peers it’s hard to make friendships as a adult and hard to open up because you’re used to being shut down & bullied. Another instance is if you have it in your mind that your friend is using you because maybe they forgot to say thank you for a favor you did or they weren’t as appreciative as you’d hope they’d be everything they do is gonna come off as them using you because you ALREADY have that thought in your mind. I have no idea if i made any sense here but hopefully you (or anyone else reading this) gets what i was saying!

I get it, I grew up in an abusive household and it caused my mind to become sooo messed up. After I saw the movie, I watched podcasts about and read up on it. In hindsight the message of the film seems so clear but when I saw it for the first I had a similar reaction as you. The movie is diving into themes of depression, how loved ones and peers view it from the outside, and how it can even be passed on through genetics and trauma. I've found a new appreciation for it for those reasons and I'd recommend reading up on it and fully rewatching (if you want to!) because I think it's a better movie when you know that each conversation and disastrous event is respresenting such real moments in the lives of people with depression.

The demon takes control of the senses and have the victims hallucinate intil they are weak enough mentally to be taken over, then it forces them to kill themselves infront of other people to create trauma and pass on the curse. The demon had Rose believe that she beated her trauma and the curse and had her stay in the house long enough till the Ex reached the house. When the Ex was close, the Demon changed the hallucinations to show Rose that all her efforts are useless and break her mentally. After that, it forced her to kill herself infront of the Ex to pass on the curse. I believe that the only was to stop this chain is for the cursed one to isolate themselves and kill themselves in the first few days since delaying gives the Demon more authority over the senses of the cursed.

I watch this movie a couple days ago on my home theater system with the Dolby Atmos surround sound it was so creepy it creeped me out watching it by myself in my room when it was dark this movie was phenomenal though for what it is One hell of a plot twist at the end especially for you know what most horrific thing I ever saw at the end of this movie! You had the best reaction to this movie out of everybody I've watched especially towards the end of the movie you got out of your chair and ran for the hills lol Best ending I've ever seen

I loved this but from the trailers I really wasn't expecting a lot. I was mostly curious. The way it portrayed trauma and not knowing what is real was super disturbing. I saw it in Dolby and there were two college age girls sitting next to me laughing and making jokes to each other. When the scene with the audio file jumpscare happened they jumped about a foot out of their seats. They sat in the same seat hiding their faces throughout the rest of the movie. When they left one said "I'm literally traumatized now"

Love this movie so much and how it talks about mental heath not being the fualt of those who have it in a way. I do wish they changed the ending a bit though but other than that it's amazing and scared the hell out of me when I saw it in the theaters. The actress of Rose is Kevin Bacon's real life daughter so that's always cool.

Am I the only one who thought the plot resembles that of the Ring? You know, the whole "pass the curse" thing. Anyways, I enjoyed the movie when it came out and I definitely enjoyed your reaction to it! 😉

It reminded me of The Ring too. I love the investigative aspect to it way more compared to Smile. It felt like she was just talking to people the entire time and getting easy answers because of other characters, like her ex husband

That's how dreams work, they are very connected to our daily lives! You saw the poster and it left a strong impression on you that day, and at night you had a dream related to that poster you saw the day before..... Standard work of dreams, no need to worry....

i saw this opening night in theaters. someone brought their 2 year old and let him wander the aisles, sobbing and screaming. for a film about the passing along of trauma, it was so sadly ironic to see.

Rose's "mother" walking around the house saying _"Rose... baby.. mommy made a mistake"_ is one of the most genuinely terrifying moments I've ever seen

girl the thing about your dream with the face of the poster is even scarier when you consider that this movie is based on a short film that had the premise of a girl telling her psychiatrist she kept having the nightmare of seeing the same smiling face every night

Smile is a horror movie that has some good moments and visuals, and decent acting from Sosie Bacon. The plot is not very strong, but it has some twists and surprises. The scares are not very scary, but they are fun. It’s not very original, but it’s entertaining. It’s a decent horror movie that you can watch if you’re in the mood. 3/5 stars.

I saw this movie in the theaters where you're supposed to watch it and it was good I saw it three times and I love that it I was not accept expecting the mind twist and the jump-scares. Like I usually anticipate that but I didn't realize it right away and I like that didn't have a happy ending cuz it's most horror films have Happy endings and that's pretty boring😊

Decent acting? That woman did an amazing job at portraying a person with long background of trauma
