Yeah I have schizoaffective disorder. You find out who care about you really fast, and to their credit it takes a fuck ton of patience. Based on what you guys described the demon just sounds like actually "demons." Schizophrenia is your fears, anxieties, or traumas manifesting through your senses. The more isolated you are the sicker you get, and people use to think that was appropriate treatment. Isolation is bad tor everyone. Having human contant helps ground you. @Darkwarlord15332 жыл бұрын
100% agree. The film works as a solid scare-fest, but fails as an analysis of trauma. The Babadook does a better job at sticking the whole concept of an evil entity as an analogy for post-traumatic stress. The Drag Me to Hell-esque ending is played out at this point too.
@User-jp1sj2 жыл бұрын
@@Darkwarlord1533 Also, I think this entire thing makes more sense if it turns out that the monster is a parasite that lives inside your mind and that its physical form isn't actually real. Even if it could make itself invisible, she should have been able to tell that it was there since she was around three inches away from it

@@User-jp1sj The monster is ptsd/mental illness. It has no physical form because it’s barely an entity. It exists only in our minds but is very much real. So with that theming in mind, I think it works as is. It being a parasite is too physical and contradicts the point a bit.

I put my patients through a hell of a lot more to beat their trauma, and you tell me she beats it in a night!?!" Then the demon wins. "Damn... That sucks... Not inaccurate... Hate this movie! Finally got back from seeing Smile! Quite terrifying for a majority of it Sosie Bacon (who i didn’t know is actually Kevin Bacon's daughter) really carries the movie making her empathetic where it seems she's slowly losing her mind Lots of disturbing imagery, 1970s esque camera angles, and effective scares Good themes on how to internalize mental health and suicide This didn't need to be 2 hours though and 2 supporting characters I didn't find likable I wanted to constantly be scared all the way through and the ending was pretty conventional yes But the final scene was nightmare inducing Plus the film succeeds thanks to this leading lady forcing to confront her trauma and let it go if only on the surface level It was better than Barbarian I admit Just hoping the next thing Parker Finn does it can tighten things a bit better Original horror is hard to do these days

I find it interesting that so many had sympathy for the main character. The entity forced her to come to terms with who she was by dropping the facade. You are presented with her sister and brother-in-law who are presented as greedy and entitled. Over the course of the film, it becomes apparent that she is no different. She is offered help and rejects it in every way. She comes across as selfless but it becomes apparent this is due to her guilt for what she has done and when she is in jeopardy, her true self becomes apparent. It's possible to say the entity is effecting her perceptions and memories that results in her guilt but, given her choices throughout the film, it's clear she was never the type of person she presented to others.

So a few long-form thoughts about this film, having just watched it... Positives: I loved the look and feel of this movie. The cinematography was incredible. The score and sound design was brilliant. The camera work was spot on, and I am excited about following the director's career. You can tell he knows what the hell he's doing. It built a great atmosphere. The opening scene was effective, and the movie was filled with really great direction throughout, but... Negatives: I absolutely despised the supporting cast, save for Rob Morgan's Talley character. Every single supporting character felt like a generic, stereotypical caricature of a person. The sister and sister's husband were awful human beings, with the husband pretty much poking fun at her career as a mental health doctor and the sister being dismissive of the serious nature of her job. Rose's fiance was a shell of a human who clearly did not care about her or have her back. If I run out of the room and my spouse/partner has a knife, is screaming, and is clearly terrified, the first thing I'm going to do is make sure she's safe, then check out the crib and make sure nothing's there. After questioning her sanity and bringing up her family's history of mental health, he disappears from the film. And that scene of him bringing up her mom is weird to me, considering her career field relies on trust, empathy, and open dialogue. Did she hide it completely and not talk about her past, or flat out lie to him? Strange to me that they wouldn't have communicated about that before getting engaged. The dialogue, as a whole, was laughably bad at some points. They made sure to scream the underlying meaning of the movie at you, saying it relies on trauma multiple times, having no nuance or room for interpretation by the audience. The ending wasn't as bad as the rest of the film, but my wife and I think we had a much better ending that, again, would have left room for audience interpretation and been more fun. Overall, I was disappointed with the film, and as it continued, I found myself getting mad at what could have been but wasn't.

I hope someone on the team sees this. It would be cool if you started a segment about Short horror films on youtube. There is one that is another horror herpes short called " Other side of the box" by Alter. You guys should check it out.

Midway in the review, the moment Korey said to not watch the trailer and come in cold with this film, I stopped the review to go watch it. I'm back from watching the movie and I loved this film as much as I loved "It Follows".

I had absolutely no interest in seeing this movie until all of my trusted KZbin reviewers all gave it glowing recommendations. Maybe I'll check it out after all

When I first saw the trailer, it reminded me of "The Smile Tapes" series by Patorikku.

The plot reminds me a bit of Pulse (Kairo), which is a j-horror. Also a great movie.

Yes. This movie has been done before . Not sure why the studio say it's an original 👍

@@babytoshiro7014 yes that’s why I can’t love Smile! I was excited at first but after seeing ALL the films is derives from and still getting heavily praised for stuff it didn’t do, I fell off. Way overhyped. It’s original for its mental health aspect tho but that’s not enough for everyone
