My mum and I went to see Breathe, a new film about the first person in the history of medicine to leave a hospital with a tracheostomy and ventilator. Josh, my brother, was the first child to be put on a ventilator as a life-preserving measure; that is, the first child (in the UK but on principal anywhere) to be put on a ventilator with a view to extending his life- at home, living, going out for meals and gigs and having fun and being alive. Because of this Josh was awarded the Citizen of Courage award from our local council 2 years later, and the ventilator extended his life a further 13 years. If you're still reading this I'm sure you'll have figured out why this film, though so full of joy, had my mum and I sobbing over the end credits. Go and see the film, it's amazing.
