Actually Naruto named that ability after the Japanese god of the moon. Naruto has a lot budism and japanese god references. Example Naruto is based on Fujin while Sasuke is based on Raijin which both are always together creating storms hence "Naruto Ninja Storm" game name or the name Shippuden which if I recall right is for whirl or tornado.
