Ok Chris Cornell was great, zero doubt. But Richie was already around and he’s always been Richie. Guitar players were well aware of him, he had a signature fender and all, before any of us ever heard about Soundgarden.

Everybody who has been a Maiden fan since the '80s has known Adrian can sing... he's always sang backing vocals live. Before Iron Maiden, he sang and played guitar in a band called Urchin. After he left Maiden (1989), he sang with his own band ASAP (Adrian Smith And Project) and put out an album called Silver & Gold.

I was very bored and uninspired and I believed I needed to change my approach and do something out of my comfort zone so I decided to abandon the guitar pick. It worked out great for me because now I am playing and writing things I never would have thought to write or play when I was using a guitar pick." (interview from 2011).
