'Smith's Coaches at Mill Lane' by Smiths Coaches - Circa 1946

This video about Smith's Coaches was in Doug's collection. It shows the company's operations of Mill Lane and includes quite a few shots of individual family members, drivers and other staff. Commentary is provided by Mrs Jackie Mills (nee Smith), daughter of Director Alf Smith and Company Secretary.

This is absolute magic stuff, we used to spend our summer holidays at Southsea. Caught the trolleybus from Caversham Bridge up to the appropriate stop in Southampton Street, then on to Mill Lane & the coaches all in line, my father would go into the office to find out which coach we were booked on. We lived close to the Promenade at Caversham Bridge & one day down at Southsea, the weather was miserable, we grabbed a Mystery Tour on a Byngs coach down at South Parade Pier, as we progressed we realised we were heading for Reading & ended up down at the Promenade that was so, so familiar. We went home, had a cup of tea & later got the coach back to Pompey. That was one of the craziest things that I ever encountered.

Anyone remember Bert Hall who drove for Smiths
