Honestly I’ve owned one of these forever now. I would honestly rate it 7.7 out of ten. Just what it is.

The Pocket Pal is perfect for traditional pocket knives. It has just the right angle. But if you do have to know your knife.

Looks great for and EDC. $11 isn't bad. Nice that they donated to the whole unit. Have to check into it for my EDC. Thanks Fred. Great review.

Good review. Smith's is a great company! I got one of the older models also. I liked it so much that I gave one to my brother who was being deployed to Afghanistan for a year. He loved it so I thought I would ask the company if they would be willing to donate some to the troops in his unit. Wow they sent they to all of his unit!

I really like my original one for reusing disposable utility blades. Just a few pulls and its sharper than new.

A lot of edge fetishists reject T-C sharpeners because they grind off steel. Well, so does a stone or sanding belt. A light touch minimizes this.

you forgot to show the condition of the cutting edge before you used the sharpener on it, apart from that i completely agree that this shouldn't be looked at as a main sharpener but as a light weight field sharpener. thanks for the nice product overview.

I have the original still making up my mind on how I feel about its ability to sharpen, I would not care personally for the extras in this version especially if it costs more

I don't recommend carbide sharpeners for new or inexperienced users to them because they tend to put way too much pressure while drawing the knife through them. If people expect to use this as a primary means to restore their edge I'd advise to profile the knives that they intend to use with it. I did that on the blades in my bob, to make it more useful.

I don't think they needed to add the extra stuff like the compass and whistle and firelighter etc. What they needed to add is maybe another sharpener for bigger blades or some sort of knife sharpening guide with the money they used to buy all those extra parts.

Those serrated pick style diamond rods in larger versions like DMT can sharpen anything short of Cold Steel serrations ....plain edges too. You just have to know how to use them properly

It may dull your knife. It depends on what angle your current blade uses.

I own a few carbide sharpeners. I will say, they have their uses, but they are not necessary. You can carry a pocket stone, if you don't mind the weight. For the size, and as a field tool, they're okay. They do not take the place of a proper 'full' sharpening system, though. There are some blade geometries they will not work as well with, such as unusual serrations, and extreme curves. Great review, except for the burn. :-P You also might want to dim your lights when trying to show flashlight shots. It helps people to get a better idea of brightness.

ChrisC30 Thank you for your comment. As for the lighting on the flashlight reviews, The effects of my room lighting will be minimal on the camera when recording a high lumen flashlight.

Will it sharpen a knife with a 1/4inch spine??
@Koolkid736
@Koolkid736 9 жыл бұрын
ElectroStrings the spine doesn't nessicarily determine the edge angle..so it depends on the actual edge of the knife.

I would never bother with the ceramic side. You get a better edge from just using the carbide blades on their own, then a steel to align the edge.

the ceramic sucks.. I have two smiths sharpeners, they put an ok edge one with the carbide, nothing steller, but workable, usually able to cut paper though not the cleanest..though does usually leave like a "micro serration" BUT the ceramic, I freakin hate....both the smiths I have the ceramic actively dulls the blade again. I can sharpen them up than "finish" on the ceramic and than it dull again after like 3 swipes of the ceramic. shit. Rather have the Lansky
