Awesome QB play is making the right decision more times than not - and that’s what Geno Smith is doing.
Welcome into StudyBall! This is a session that I have been waiting to do for quite awhile. Geno Smith has played great all year long! When I watched him play early in the year, I thought to myself, he is going to be playing at this level for a long time. I kept finding other guys or other things that jumped out to me each week and I think Geno is going to sustain this. I’ll have opportunities to break him down throughout the course of the year. Even today, I’m not sure, this is not close to his best tape but with him making a number of plays in a game that was a challenge and then making the game winner, I thought to show people what I have seen from him all year long. What I have seen is a quarterback who is playing the position. Yes, he has a big arm and is making the big plays. He can also do some things with his legs. But to me, what’s really separated him and made him so consistent all year long: he knows what he is seeing. He is getting the ball to the right guy on time. He is just playing. We can have all this talent in the NFL. But what it continues to come back to when I watch quarterbacks play consistently at a high level: they know what they are doing with the ball. They know where their eyes should be as soon as the ball is snapped. They are making quick decisions and they get it to the playmakers. It’s not just running around and playing Streetball and making plays. It’s playing the quarterback position and Geno has played the position as well as anyone else. Maybe not in the MVP conversation but he definitely could be. He has played that well and consistently this year. Let me take you into the tape and show you what I’m seeing. We definitely saw some of these things when he was young and we didn’t see it consistently. We saw a guy who was always trying to make the big play. Now, he’s not caught up with that. He has matured and grown and says let me do what I know to do. Allow the guys around me to make the plays.
I love it. Like I said, maybe not his best game so he didn’t have the big throws down the field. The more I watch the tape, the more happy I am with doing a StudyBall on this game. It’s about playing the position. We fall in love with the “wow”. Quarterbacks who make a mistake, but after the mistake they make the wow play. Then we all think he's awesome. I’ll tell you what, awesome quarterback play is making the right decision more times than not. Making the right layups over and over again because that’s what wins games in the NFL. That’s what Geno is doing. Maybe why he isn’t in the MVP conversation is because he hasn’t made wow throws that we see from Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen. Maybe even Joe Burrow. He plays the game pretty much like Geno and maybe at a little higher level right now. But Geno played at a higher level earlier in the year. Geno Smith is playing some really good football. He knows what he is looking at. He is definitive. He is letting his eyes tell him where to go, he is on time and accurate. That’s why Seattle is still in this mix when no one gave them a chance. Russell Wilson is gone, Geno Smith, a career journeyman. A huge change and people think they have no chance. Geno has changed that perception. Now people believe Seattle has a chance to beat anyone in the NFL. It starts with his quarterback play and him playing the position. Doing what he is supposed to do with the ball over and over again. That’s why the Seattle Seahawks have a chance to win every single game they play in.

Love me some Geno. His style of play will last as long as his arm will last. From what I understand from other players, he can sling it as good as anyone in the game. It looks like he is going to be more than competent for a while. Just put the pieces around him. Seattle needs a defensive heavy draft, and they need at least a couple of the picks to be home runs. Then I think it would be safe to say that they are true championship contenders.

Yeah, if the hit on defense in the draft they could be scary good baring injuries of course. I don't think you'll hit on 6 guys like the last draft that's almost impossible to do. But a few impact players on defense. They could be very good for 5 years and they'd be cheap players. Not overpriced FA. You do have to overpay a FA.

He definitely uses his feet to pick up downs too, something that will go away in a season or two with age making him even more vulnerable to sacks in the pocket. Though he might age well due to so many seasons on the sideline.

Eric Decker said this about Geno: “I always say Geno threw the best ball that I have played with. I really truly believe that in terms of the spiral, the catchability of it. I got to play with one of the best in Peyton Manning and spent some weeks in New England during camp with (Tom) Brady. I still felt Geno had the best.”

they certainly have the talent on offense, with exception to needing some help on the interior offensive line. they need to reload the front 7 in free agency and the draft while maybe drafting another guy for the secondary, but carroll and schneider just put together one of the best draft classes in recent history, so you can definitely trust them to find studs in the draft

Geno is such a low key no drama, self confident person... unlike we know who they think they are at a certain level in their own mind... also his throws/spirals are so beautiful to watch as it spins like Warren Moon and Roy Dewalt of @BC Lions in the CFL

No, because at least this year Russ (a) can't run around anymore without getting sacked, (b) still can't/won't step up in the pocket, (c) rarely throws to the middle of the field unless it's DEEP, so (d) he hasn't been making many great plays. Will any of that change next year? Maybe, maybe not.

@@FotoSharpRuss is second to Allen on 40+ throws, has a bunch of 20+ passes too. Russ has been the best red zone QB over the past 4 years and Hackett designed the most effective single season red zone offense in NFL history. Hackett is new and inept as a head coach and Russ is in decline, but that’s only half the story. The rest is dearth of reliable weapons after Williams went down, Jeudy and Sutton are extremely overrated.

Not that he's Joe Montana. But he looks a little like him. Just read the defense and take the best throw on a given play. If the defense gives you 5 yards on a play, take it. Throw to the guy that is open. It doesn't win you MVPs because like Kurt said they aren't wow plays. They just move the chains and score you points. Geno is just a valuable at Allen is with the Bills. Even if Geno finishes 72%. 32ish TD and 10 picks and throw for 4000+ yards he has zero chance to even get an MVP vote. If you would have told me at this point in the season Geno would be 22-6 3100 yards and 72%, I'd have asked you, what have you been smoking. He's putting up MVP numbers just not WoW plays that get you MVP votes. If Geno played on in the east, he'd be getting buzz. He doesn't so good luck getting 1 vote.

Looking at Geno Smith, one has to wonder how many other qbs who didn't play well early in their careers might have been able to turn it around if put in a better situation when they were a little more mature and a lot more experienced? It's too bad high draft pick rookie qbs are expected to produce immediately instead of being able to sit for a while and learn the position like, say, Steve Young or Aaron Rodgers got to do.
@GORILLA_PIMP
@GORILLA_PIMP Жыл бұрын
That's a really good question I'm sure there's definitely a few qbs who could play much better that end up slipping through the cracks But on the other hand you would also think that IF they could play better then coaches would identify that and either get him on the field or trade him for players they need That would be an interesting topic for some ex nfl qb to make a video about actually

Is it typical for QBs to make these sort of highly-analytical judgement calls pre-snap? Or is it more of a "feel" thing that comes with experience?

Great analysis! I know it wasn't the topic this time, but don't overlook the coaching. This is what the Seahawks teach. Wilson was great at Seattle, and the difference we see today can't possibly be all on Wilson. Not to take away from Geno even slightly. Surely he has a great future at Seattle, which is going to be exciting to watch.

News Alert to the TV sports debate's media Naysayers, Hall Of Fame quarterback Kurt Warner probably would like to tell everyone, Seattle Seahawks starting quarterback Geno Smith's breakout year, reminds him of himself when he got the opportunity to display his skills. Guess what, he would be right in my opinion. In Geno's case, he is playing with a team who has confidence in his on-the-field performance, starting with head coach Pete Carroll, and players as a whole, offensively and defensively. Who knows, if Geno leads the Seahawks to a Superbowl Championship, and he plays at a high consistent level for the next 4 or 5 years, he could end up wearing a Gold Hall Of Fame coat, just like Warner. Just real talk about the play of Geno Smith.

@larrylindgren9484

True if the read says throw it you do. But there were a few plays if he waited a 1 count longing the big play was coming open. But you don't complete 72% of your passes waiting on the big play. You take your passes deep when the defense tells you to. Which Geno has done pretty much all year. I'll say it again I'm shocked at how well he's played. He's looked like a 250-million-dollar QB. Only if he was 25 instead of 32, you'd have a QB for 10 years. He is a young 32 thou. He's not really played in years. He's not a beat up 32.
