I don't agree completely, sure Neo in Matrix 2 and 3 could handle agents no problem, but other characters still struggled, like Morpheus vs Agent on the truck, he only won by luck and element of surprise in the end and Trinity almost died. The fight choreography between Morpheus and Smith was pretty good. Cuts only when necessary--especially when attacks connect, but even then camera angled stayed at some parts when Morpheus landed a few. NO SHAKEY CAM. Combo strings had good rhythm. Great use of the environment/set, especially when Morpheus' head hits the toilet (ouch). This scene wasn't so much about showing the differences in skill, but the difference in power; who can do what. Morpheus can block and counter, but Smith hardly reacts to blows and is unstoppable. Not one to enjoy seeing the good guys lose, but I am fascinated with the effort Fishburne and Weaving put into this scene (none of whom had any martial arts background if I am not mistaken).

I think it adds to the quality of the scene. I miss many of the really good action movies that actually took their time. Like Escape from New York, Terminator and the like. No fucked up shaky cam, and nonsense cutting. Just the raw action scene to speak for it self. Those movies have been also very gritty and dirty in what they showed, particularly when a character was beaten a lot. When you say slow and heavy, I see it as quality and realism (kinda).
@Tesla_Death_Ray6 жыл бұрын
I think Airbag888 meant physically heavy in their movements. If i'm being critical their attacks are almost slow enough that they'd look kinda telegraphed, which makes the counters less believable. There's still all the great stuff Leidern mentioned going for it at the same time.

The way alot of action sequences are filmed now allows for guys like Liam Nielsen or much older actors to complete a fight scene that makes them look credible as that character, however it's done piece by piece, step by step with assisted cuts many more times that what is was used in movies like the Matrix or even The John Wick movies. Although I love the Taken films.. put Liam in a position of having to train to prep for long hard hitting choreography scenes with minimal cuts, itll be a much more challenging situation.

They both know basically they’re about to fight. Morpheus knows he’s basically committed suicide, and Smith knows he’s basically won the lottery. He has at his mercy the great Morpheus. The most wanted man of the resistance. Public enemy number one, only second in value to Neo, Smith has been trying to catch Morpheus for a very very long time. So he’s very satisfied knowing this is who’s on top of him. He knows there’s no way any human can escape an agent in such a situation. Agents are way more powerful than humans. Also considering the room they are in, and the police force that are there with him, he figures there’s no need to rush things. Also the director wisely chose to build suspense.

It's so absurdly simple how they followed through with the threat Smith posed. Prefacing the fight is the incredibly subtle detail of Smith grinning wickedly with flared eyebrows right after he grabs Morpheus by the collar - he's not going to kill Morpheus, he's going to brutalize him and he's going to _enjoy_ it. The first major thing Smith does is multiply what Morpheus does to him: one headbutt earns three, and you see Morpheus visibly dazed just by that opening trifecta. Then, with a single punch, not only gets Morpheus off him, but launches the man back against the wall. Following that is the double fist-slam stand-up move, which reminds me so much of Dracula rising from his coffin, and the camera angle by the end of that shot makes it feel like he's suddenly looming over you. Lastly, after just standing there and letting Morpheus get in four punches and kicks, he flat-out stops Morpheus' fifth attack and puts him on the floor with two moves. Done. In sixteen seconds you know Smith is the real deal and Morpheus isn't walking away from this fight.

Something about this fight chills me more than others in the series. For starters, Morpheus is well aware this could be the last thing he ever does and even he seems afraid, screaming as he prepares to give his life for Neo. At first, he seems reasonably confident when fighting Smith, taunting him as an act of resistance. After landing one hit, however, Smith lets him know it's futile by landing multiple hits on Morpheus. Smith's fighting style then becomes increasingly tank-like. He can dodge or block Morpheus' hits, but he doesn't always bother. He's also slow and heavy. His movements are stiff, but even in terms of him getting up from the floor, he moves like the rules don't apply and his face when he does signals a mix of contempt and possibly amusement. Meanwhile, Morpheus is desperately trying to buy the others some time to get out of there as they're fleeing through the decrepit walls. Fantastic performances from all involved.

@@mollies13 Agent Smith was self aware. The other programs and agents were content with their roles. I believe his understanding of the matrix on top of his passion made him a better fighter. I believe in the second film Morpheus had already fought an agent and knew Neo was on the way. His knowledge combined with his confidence made him a formable fighter in that moment. Before then, everyone was terrified of an agent.

Everything about this fight scene was excellent. The choreography wasn't overly flashy, and the actors did so much more than just act out their moves. You can see Morpheus's expressions progressively change from sharp at the beginning of the fight, to barely holding on and almost dazed as he gets beaten to a pulp. The facial expressions after every big hit really sold it too. It only lasts for around 40 or so seconds, but I feel like this was the best fight in the whole series. Props to the production crew and Laurence on this one. There's a reason I can remember this fight so much more vividly than the others.

This is a genuinely terrifying scene - you can feel that Morpheus is in true peril against Smith here - the person who guided Neo and the audience through the rules of the Matrix like a father is no match for the brutality and sheer force of an Agent. I always liked the difference in fighting styles between the agents and the humans. The agents are like blunt instruments; they lack finesse because they don’t need it as their strength is enough to defeat any opponent. Although the humans (barring Neo) are no match for an agent, they fight using predominantly eastern fighting styles. From my albeit limited knowledge, I see eastern styles of fighting as less of a means to completely defeat your opponent and more of a means to attain discipline, personal defense, and enlightenment. Because enlightenment is the ultimate goal of Morpheus and his crew, as well as a major theme of The Matrix, it’s cool that this philosophy is reflected in not just their words, but in their literal fight against the agents. Although my characterization of eastern fighting styles may be incorrect, I feel as though the difference between how the agents and the humans carry themselves in a fight conveys to the audience their difference in mindset and goals.

The Agents are programs so not only do they have great strength but they are also limited in their "thinking" and ways to attack a situation. They lack finesse. They keep butting their heads at someone until they give up, literally and metaphorically speaking.
@Sennken2 жыл бұрын
I think you're overimagining here. They chose eastern styles because they look cool. Nothing more, nothing less. It has nothing to do with underlying philosophy and all to do with kung fu movies being the rage at that time. Also you're mistaken about western styles "not being about defeating your opponent". That's just nonsensical. The purpose of any combat style is to defeat your opponent. That's what the word "combat" implies. A combat style that isn't meant to defeat your opponent is not a combat style by definition. Combat training is inherently about self improvement, because it takes a crapload of time to get good at it and to train your body to a point where you can use the style consistently. Eastern styles may put more emphasis on this, because that's in their culture, but it's not something unique to them. You won't argue that doing jumping ropes and throwing 5 kg balls for hours to train in boxing requires as much discipline as static holding pots with sand in Okinawan karate, right? You're also not correct about Morpheus and co. goals. Enlightenment implies searching and finding truth about something (the world, oneself, etc). Morpheus and the crew have already attained enlightenment by realizing that Matrix isn't real. There's nothing more to be enlightened about in this context, so how can they strive for it then? Their sole goal is Freedom now. Freedom for themselves (to be free from the raids by the machines) and for people who are still in the matrix. They're rebels, revolutionaries , not Buddhist monks. I'm not trying to attack you or anything, but it just felt that your points were so far off the mark that i had to add my two cents.

Sean Taylor I don’t think so. Neo and Trinity were practically screaming at each other and Switch and Apoc were having a shootout a couple floors below, yet Smith and Morpheus were just whispering. That’s a true Captain, sacrificing himself for his crew.

I love the fight scene between Smith and Morpheus. It is not just some lazily written scene where punches are exchanged and then the bad guy wins. You can actually see from the start that the Agent is physically stronger and more resilient than a human Redpill. Morpheus is skilled, fast, improvises pretty well (the one-hand stand and double kick to the torso, or when he goes up in the corner), but the Agent simply has too much of a physical advantage. This is especially notable when he takes and shrugs off a couple of hits from Morpheus, then strikes fist against fist, and knocks him down onto the toilet. From that point on Morpheus is clearly getting more and more desperate, while Smith is simply shrugging off all his attacks and brutally overpowers him. Great scene!

Idk why but this is one of my favorite fight scenes in the whole trilogy. Maybe it's the pump up scream then dive through the wall, the fact that this is the very first fight scene we see with an agent, maybe it's the fact that earlier in the movie Morpheus beats Neo, rather easily at first, then we see him get annihilated here. Or perhaps it's all three and I revel in villains getting the spotlight like this every once in a while. Who knows?🤷🏻♂️
